How do laptops use wireless internet? I am looking into buying an AlienWare gaming laptop to play FFXI online on, but I want it to be portable. How does it work? Someone told me something about an internet card or something?? Sorry if I sound like a n00b lol.
The wifi hardware is not external on recent laptops.

Even if it is not (In case of really old notebooks), you can get a card for the card slot on the side (a "PCMCIA card") that will allow you to go wireless. But seriously, pretty much all new notebooks have builtin wireless capabilities?

Wi-fi adapters are available as USB devices, PCMCIA cards, Cardbus cards, and CompactFlash cards. You might need to get this, say, if the onboard hardware is just your basic wireless-b/wireless-g gear, and at home you're using the new 802.11a or 802.11n draft.
