I also posted this in 4chan's /g/, but i doubt i'll get any replies.
here's my problem.
This morning before work, i shut my computer down. When i came home, and tried to boot it up, and received failure. The CPU light flickered on and off, and the computer sounded like it was just rebooting a bunch of times. Like, a ticking noise.
The hard drive still worked though. So, i took it all apart and plugged it back in. It did the same thing, but only for like 1 second instead of .5 per blink, and the light was brighter.
I took the cover off of the power supply, and it seems like it's not running all the way. Did i short it? If so, is there any way to fix it? I looked over the internet, but i couldn't find much, because the computer is about 7 years old, as is the power supply.
simply - I think the power supply is shorted. Is there any way to fix it (it's a Bestec, model ATX-250-12e), or should i just buy another one?
If, hypothetically, i bought a new power supply, are there any brands someone would recommend? I'm looking on newegg.com.
If you have a warranty still try to get it replaced. If not, try to fix it. Failing that, just get a new one. You can get a nice Corsair for next to nothing.
No, no no, never take a cover off a fucking power supply, that's a good way to end up electrocuted and dead. PSUs hold massive residual charges in their capacitors and you are very lucky.
Buy a new one.
