Wanting to make a server (13)

Hello all-
So my friend gave me one of his old computers...HP with 40 gig HD, 256 mb ram. I want to use it as a server. I've heard good things about Linux when it comes to servers, and I've kinda looked into Ubuntu Server Edition...but I was wondering if there might be a better/easier one for me to use?

Sorry...

I should add that I also want to take the 40 gig hd from the HP computer, and switch it with the 160 gig HD that I have on my current desktop. So, being the noob that I am when it comes to that kinda stuff as well, how would I do all of that too?

You can use ubuntu standard to do all of the above.

HELLO FAGGOT, DEFINE "SERVER".

IE, WHAT DO YOU WANT IT TO DO?

Don't listen to these fags, OP. Ubuntu is a great OS and easier to install than windows, though you're going to have to learn a bit of networking and maybe some UNIX if you want to get the most bang for your buck out of your server setup. This is actually much easier than it sounds.

There's an introduction to the command line here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

And a guide to setting up a server here:

http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/

As to the hard drive, what do you need to know? Are you having trouble physically connecting it?

Thanks for the links!

And as far as the HD goes, I want to put my current OS (Win XP) on the (its actually a 60 gig) HD, and move the 160 (thats currently on my computer, with the current OS) into the other computer I want to turn into a server. Is there a way to clone the OS from the 160 and put it on the 60?

Not if you intend to use Windows. It's defective by design.

I did a quick google for it and some people say this is good:

There's a free trial download. I haven't used it myself though so I can't say how good it is.
