Hi, I would like to ask you guys what kind of backup software is out there that you like. I'm currently using Areca, but development is a bit slow and judging from the tracker stats it looks like the devs are getting swamped.
So that gets one wondering - is Areca still the best for me? What is out there? To qualify for me, it must:

• Have a Windows GUI.
• Support incremental / differential (whatever you call it) backups.
• Be free (as in open source) software, because I will use the backups for archival purposes.
• Ideally have a good track record of backwards archive compatibility (Areca hasn't).
• Dumps backups at some place on my disk, so that I can later burn them.

Nice to have would be:

• Allow you to remove the backup file data, but not the metadata after burning. (Areca can't.)
• Automatic scheduling of backups.
• Full disk backups. (Areca can't.)

If you had these needs and wants, what would you use?

If it were me, I'd pick up a decade old PC, throw some server variant of any popular linux distro on it, and have rsync and cronjobs configured to perform all of those actions. No GUI afaik, though :-(

That doesn't meet the requirements, it would be a step back from Areca. Plus, I'd need an extra computer for no good reason.
