This thread is for discussion of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, easily the best show of the season, if not the year!

(This is how you start a thread. Not like http://4-ch.net/anime/kareha.pl/1145565708/. Watch and learn.)

Strange ass anime. Did you notice that some of the episodes seem out of order?
They don't "seem" out of order, they are out of order.
Watch the previews!
I did watch the previews. That's why I said they seemed out of order. If I didn't see the previews, I would've blamed the subber.
haha, I love this show.
Haruhi tells correct order and Kyon tells broadcasting order in the previews .

ED single is at #2 on the charts. Will 2ch succeed?
>>13 No.
Some group calling itself "Animanda" has started subbing the show too, but apparently they're just a bunch of idiots whose only claim for the value of their translation is that it's higher res than a.f.k.'s. I didn't check to make sure, but I'm fairly certain their translation is nowhere near the same quality, especially after having spoken to them on IRC.
Avoid.
now all we need are people to do it in cosplay

So if you haven't seen it, what exactly are you basing your criticism on? Here's an idea: just watch it, and if you still think it sucks, then stick with a.f.k.'s version.
VIPPERs celebrate Hare Hare Yukai getting #5 on the charts!

Michael Jackson joins SOS-dan!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg2s1m67nzw
I'm basing it on the fact that a.f.k.'s translation is one of the very best fan translations I've seen in years, and I highly doubt some random warez-scene group is going to beat that, especially after having talked to them about it and found out that the thing they think is most important about their release is the high resolution.
Sigh. I tried posting on the sos-dan.com forums, but man, that sure was a waste of time. It's the worst kind of inane phpBB-style forum.
Let's get some discussion going in here instead! About issues such as:
Also, some more youtube links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gRaE_RFD_U (piano ED)
There's the fact that the put SOS Group in Ep 1 and SOS Brigade in EP 2. Then the fact that they basically copied a.f.k.'s translation "Save the world by overloading it with fun" except they put "our world" instead of "the world." Then the fact that they make so many tense errors in episode 2 that the meaning of what's being said is lost.

The manga was cancelled after the first volume, wasn't it? I read somewhere that the novel author didn't have much involvement with it.
There are two manga adaptions. >>27 refers to the better one.
> or is it just the translation that's bad?
It seems accurate enough, but some of the dialogue sounds unnatural and disjointed. They need good proofreaders.
>"Ashita e PIN-PON DASH"
Ashita no Joe and Pani Poni Dash?
It's not proofreading, they need a translator with who has some facility with the English language. The actual translating is only half the work - you need to be able to write fluent and natural prose in English too, and this translation kind of fails that.
(It's definitely not alone in this, though.)
No, there are any number of titles with "ashita" or "dash" in them, this should be more specific.
> with who
GJ, me.
The novel translation definitely suffers from this.
Based on a.f.k's translation and google, ping pong dash means doorbell prank.

If it's any consolation, they have enabled anon posting on their Suggestion board. There are also a pair of active debates on the subject in these two threads.

The idiocy in those threads makes my head hurt.
Honestly I spent considerable time to post the translation of Nagato Yuki's 100 books (´・ω・`)
but no one except wikipedia did post comment on it (´・ω・`)
Yes I know this is the weird of otakuship, but... (´・ω・`)
or it's just for my stupid Engrish...? (´・ω・`)
i don't really understand the idea that assuming a fake internet identity is for some reason more "courageous" than posting as anonymous. it's the same shit.
So, ep 9 will be the final ep, it looks like. The series is 14 episodes, right?
They're really having fun with the non-linearity.

Trivia
In episode 8 Haruhi quoted "Elementary, my dear Watson" line from Sherlock Holms series.
This episode was aired on May 22, which was the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Interesting. It's unfortunate that so few of the Japanese books are available in translation.
And I really need to try reading Hyperion now.
So, how about the signficance of episode 9?
By all reports, the show will be 14 episode, and that was the 14th episode. If the producers are really planning on airing all the intervening episodes (which might be a bit of a risk assumption), they're essentially saying they won't make a big climax to the story to end it. The final episode might be a climax of some sort, but it will be set earlier in the story.
There were also reference to a sequel to the movie from the first episode. So, speculation: Are we being told there will be a second season? Or will the producers do something even more strange?
Overall, lot of people seem to have though the episode was boring, but I enjoyed it, because I got the joke that the producers were once again messing with the viewers, just like in the first episode.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71T6x-VrzTU&search=haruhi
Haruhi ED reaches #1? Which chart is that from?
I must say the episode 11 is one of the best anime episode in the past few years. Not to mention the massive of palodies, Ravel's, Shostakovich's, and espicially Tchaikovsky's symphonies are inserted in PERFECT timing. Seeing Nagato's emotional cues is also wonderful. Simply great.
I really love that episode, especially the part where Haruhi wants a gundam rx-78!
Yuki's "Permission?" scene was a real masterpiece of directing.
It's also worth noting that the episode is nothing but filler and totally predictable, but it's still utterly awesome.
A fan read out the source code seen in Nagato's typing scene, and compiled it.
source
http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.org.cc
http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.cc (minor fix)
compiled file
http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.exe
Wow... It worked...
Yes it is filler, but there is one very important scene in this episode. I mean...
We witnessed the historical moment when a machine(humanoid interface) gained "emotion"!
She couldn't express it clearly yet, but Kyon could sense it.
For some reason, this reminds me of the scene when Rachel finds out that she doesn't have true emotinos.
Well, I've been impressed with the handling of computer stuff in the series up until now, but that's pretty impressive.
However, that source code is obviously from a half-finished version of Nagato's hack: She's only scanning for the correct process to inject code in, and the scanning doesn't seem to be complete either. The hack code itself is not there yet!
>>62
What does it do? Too lazy to read the code, and as a programmer, I'm not just going to download a random exe since someone says it's based off of a cartoon. :p
If the exe is really just the compiled version of the code, it'll pop up a message box, then scan through some system internals, and do nothing (except print some debug data, which was apparently added by the person who copied the source from the anime).
Wow. Episode 12 features what is probably the first ever reference by an anime show to Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead.
That is mighty impressive, as is the fact that the translator caught the reference and got the lines out of the script.
Oh, and the obligatory Youtube link to ENOZ' God Knows...

Can you believe that Tsuruya-san's seiyuu is the one who did Osaka in Azumanga Daioh?
man, i just watched up to episode 12 of this series, really funny =) i really liked it, i had it in my comp for a while but never sat down to watch it, then yesterday i made it anime day wherei would catch up on anime (so i would know whats up in AX2006 that is coming, lucky i live like 20 mins away), and glad i did. =) i really like the characters and its really funny...
best part i liked was the parady of Phoenix Wright ;)
As of episode 12 I think I'm in love with both Haruhi and Yuki. Sad, I know.
i like haruhi and mikuru =) mikuru's theme song always cracks me up w/ her cute singing
According to some infomation sites, it seems episode 12 was done by 21 genga-men (key animators). That's quite exceptional. I've rarely heard any TV anime episode that more than 20 key animators involved in. Haruhi's live performance may possibly be one of the most money consuming scene in TV anime history.
It sure looks like it was. You really can tell they're pulling out all the stops.
This all makes me worried that the Haruhi producers are raising the bar so impossibly high, the rest of the industry will just throw up their arms in resignation and leave the business forever.
>>76
Or they'll just add a lot more loli panty shots etc to their shows.
I've only started watching this series this evening and just finished the first 4 episodes, but I have to say it's fantastic great animation and very funny. Reaffirmed my faith in anime.

The school is said to be the alma mater of Tanigawa Nagaru, the auther of original novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu.
http://www.hyogo-c.ed.jp/~nishikita-hs/guidance/english/intro.html
Astonishingly enough, the cultural festival of the school was actually held on Jun 17th, the day before Live A Live episode was aired!

I thought this would be a lame anime, but I am loving every moment of it. Only bad part so far was that annoying scene of silence with Nagato reading a book, with barely audible ambient noise from a neighbouring classroom.
>>88 but that scene really did a good job of outdoing the infamous Rei and Asuka standing in an elevator with nothing happening scene from Eva.
You watched that far, and you still can't tell that the producers like to mess with the viewers?
The information quantity of that episode is pretty larg,e but I think most of them are mere junk info for non-Japanese.
There's Aya Hirano's "God Knows" TV live-performance today. Check out youtube or something lol.
Someone needs to make a HARUHIGASM t-shirt.
>>94
I'd wear that. At home.
You imply that people here go anywhere else.
I've found that this show is best if you don't expect humor. It seems to me, as it progresses, it become more art than humor, especially in "Some Day in the Rain."
Also, the light novels are great.

Good point. I don't what I was thinking when I wrote that.

Well. I hope nobody has any silly ideas like trying to watch it chronologically now.
