There are a lot of series out there that aren't as popular and *still* getting US licencing. Which makes it okay to post them here.

Happy World is about a fella name Takeshi, who ends up running into an Angel named "Elle". It's a comedy with the first ep being a crack-up, and it slowly winding down into a drama.

Hanaukyo Maid's is another series, however for some strange reason the 2nd season (La Verite) has been licenced, but this hasnt :S Anyway, Its a good series to sit down and watch.

Yes, we are all big YKK fans here. The OVA comes straight off the manga, and the artwork is superb.
Got more to the list? Thats all I could find in the mean time.
I am mildly surprised that Narutaru hasn't been licensed, because I understand the manga (under the name Shadow Star) is at least somewhat popular. Then again, I can see how companies would be a bit squeamish about the content.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito is full of yuri fanservice and weird and wonderful little stories, and you'd think it'd be a definite moneymaker for any licenser, but nothing yet.

> There are a lot of series out there that aren't as popular and *still* getting US licencing
I'm still stuck at the stage of disbelief over some of the series that are actually being made in the first place.
It's better for a studio to make an anime with no plot than to wait for a good plot to come forth some day. A man has to eat.
>what

Koi Kaze? Not licenced? Not suprising me somewhat. Considering the nature of the story.
I think he meant "Popular series that have yet to be licensed, which makes it okay to post them here."
>>5
I'll agree on that. But some of those plots are pure tripe. Any one of us here could probably write more compelling scripts. That's sad.
They don't HAVE to scrape the bottom of the barrel, and it's not like there's a shortage of good manga to draw ideas from. Or books. Or real-world events. Or watching their dog get run over by a lawnmower. Or...

lol konomini
Note that plot isn't everything.
Soukyuu no Fafner for example. It seems they worked on the plot in depth, but the delivery is going very slow, lots of empty talks, the charas look all the same. I gave up after 13 eps.
Then there is Tsukuyomi - Moon Phase. The plot is thin but it's a pleasure to see the animation and the characters interact.

Those 3 ARE licensed.
Who got Koi Kaze? Geneon themselves?
yes. geneon. koi kaze, geneon. geneon, koi kaze.
Of course a plot isn't everything. But I'll argue it is usually a necessary condition to develop an excellent anime.
Good animation > shit animation
Good plot > shit plot
Good plot & animation > the rest
So what are those crappy anime you are talking about?
Remember, one crap anime may be gold for another person.
I'm speaking in general.
But my favorite gag-reflex one at the moment is GANTZ. Even the manga sucked royally (Hiroya Oku is the most overrated hack ever, IMNHO - he's just plain damn _rotten_). Then again, perhaps I'm just letting my extremely negative reactions about the manga color the anime.
Of all manga to use, why GANTZ? And the anime is now licensed to boot. Talk about sick joke.
Wasn't the Gantz anime requested to be made by the author's himself, or his studio, or his fans? I didn't read this, but it was my impression at the time that it was a fan-made project, the home page had a crude flash movie made out of manga scans and had an amateurish feeling to it. Then they were apparently so desperate to get it to air that they put it on a censoring TV station? Did money ran out? Then the censoring was done with an blunt axe, rendering the story incomprehensible at times - more proof of non-professional work.
I agree. GANTZ the animated series has failed miserably compared to the manga, and I'm not quite sure how the hell it scored its licence so early in the piece, whilst other series wait.. and wait for it...
I don't belive that a series has to be licensed to be 'good' :P
But that said...
License Kokoro Toshokan & Keroro Gunsou!
Keroro would be really hard to bring over. There's already 52 episodes and I think they're going for 152 now.
America wants Brother Dear Brother!
What it really comes down to is, a couple of companies are working smart. They grab the anime series that have high popularity on the trackers. But then they also have little money left over for other things.
Other companies seem to either be making deals with Japanese investors or just shooting in the dark for something.
Viz, for ages, had first crack at anything associated with Kodansha, because it's got a large portion of its soul leased cheap to Kodansha. ADV tends to get a lot of stuff from its Japanese investors. Genon and naturally Bandai have their own rights to things since they ARE subsidiaries of larger, Japanese concerns.
I wonder in some cases if it's a matter of Japense management utterly misconstruing what would hit it off in the States.
I just saw "Pugyuru." Dear god.
Imagine that getting licensed.
>Imagine that getting licensed.
If Bobobo and "Zatch" Bell could get licensed...
Momoiro Sisters hasn't been licensed yet, has it?
I'm really, really surprised Maria-sama ga Miteru hasn't been picked up yet. They showed the fansubs at a prime video hour at Otakon '04, and given the fandom surrounding Utena (As well as Onna! coming up) you'd think someone'd have at least the first season by now.
I would think that 2x2=Shinobuden wasn't going to get picked up evar, but Right Stuf announced it at AX, so I'm really psyched for that. I hope they bring back Georgette Riley for Miyabi, and I will give them my firstborn if Liam O'Brien was to VA Onsokomaru.

Man, reading these comments from Europe feels a lot like listening to a drunk person - not because they're bad, but just because licensing often = death over here. The perspectives are often totally different (especially the fact that listening to something well-done like Kare Kano in dub is still really, really annoying changes things).

Same here in Asia...
> If Bobobo and "Zatch" Bell could get licensed...
I don't get why people complain about that name change. HELLO WE'D LIKE TO MARKET A CHILDREN'S ANIME NAMED AFTER A SLANG TERM FOR THE FEMALE GENITALIA wouldn't get anyone very far.
what's really terrible is 2x2 = Shinobuden got licensed....
ugh.... it hurts just thinking about what'll happen to that series when the english version is released.
>>33
yeah, because all children and everyone else knows that slang term, and anyone possibly using that word must mean it.
Nope. Personally, I've never even heard of that slang term before it was mentioned that it was the reason the name was changed.
>>34
god forbid i be able to purchase english-language dvds of a show i enjoyed with a completely intact japanese-subtitled version done by a company with an extremely good track record for such things! the things people bitch and moan about, christ.
>>35
you are quite possibly more sheltered than the typical interweb user if you'd never heard the word "gash" used in reference to vaginas. furthermore, whether or not you personally know the word is irrelevant. as soon as that show started airing as "gash bell" do you not think everybody and anybody (this isn't just the over-reacting soccer moms anime fans use as a scapegoat all the time) will ask the question "why is this show named after pussy?" whether or not the kid knows it, the parent does. that's bad for business. the first rule of kids' TV is to get in good with the parents. they probably wouldn't have called it manko bell either.
goddamnit i want haruhi licensed
then the world can see just why kate higgins is that awesome
p.s. habeeb it!
>>37 just why kate higgins is that awesome
Your fucking insane.
she can make any ear bleed
why do you like her? because she voices Sakura Haruno on the dub of Naruto... why why why why
>>40
sakura is hot, don't deny that.
so is denbo and megumi.
>>41
Sakura as a character yes
the voice actress no
i suppose its better then high pitched hamster squeaks that a lot of Japanese dubs sound like
