I am unfamilar with this literary techinique, what is its common name? It makes the everything after the first 5 minutes seem like beating a dead horse until the end where they actually involve the protaganist. I do not take it as a good sign when I know a character is going to die 10 seconds after they are introduced. How am I supposed to develop a connection with them?
