I am Japanese,
Please answer my quetion to kind American
Is Puffy really popular in the United States?
In Japan, It is said that they have a high popularity in the United States.
Yep, I guess they're pretty popular here in the 'states. They did the opening to popular Childrens's cartoon "Teen Titans" and later even got their own show.
Although, here they're known as "Puffy Ami-Yumi" since the name "Puffy" was taken, or so I hear.
Thanks.
Puffy is realy popular in the'states ,
but sie is popular anime caractor rather than singer.
In Japan,it is often said that person who isn't realy popularity is popularity in the states
Please answer next quetion,
In the states, who is the most famous person in the Japanese?

That would have to be Koizumi Junichiro, being the Prime Minister of Japan and all.
Other than that, I would say Ichiro Suzuki (baseball player on the Seattle Mariners), followed by Akira Kurosawa (The film writer/director), and Beat Takeshi (the actor).
>In Japan,it is often said that person who isn't realy popularity is popularity in the states
I think that's less true than it used to be, now that it's easy to access Japanese media and culture due to the internet and modern technology.
lol Puffy Ayumi has their own TV show in america!
"Hi Hi Puffy Ami-Yumi" is on Cartoon Network

the average american probably doesn't know any famous japanese people. there certainly ARE japanese who are famous here, but nobody is at a level of popularity where everybody in america knows who they are. ichiro suzuki was pretty big when he first came here but even he didn't get to that point. they showed takeshi's castle on TV here, but they gave it a parody dub. poor beat became "captain tenille". anime fans in the US know him because of battle royale.
this site, however, is (obviously) populated by westerners who do follow japanese pop culture. this is really uncommon in the states to begin with. most of us got into it from japanese animation and manga (which are just barely below the mainstream). if you ask us about this stuff, we're much more likely to know. the average american won't know puffy. kids probably would, but they would know them as cartoon characters, not a band.

Not everybody, no. But quite a few people should know at least who a few of those people are.
Anyone following politics or who reads the newspaper should know Koizumi Junichiro. And heck, I know a lot of people know of Ichiro Suzuki. In any given library you can find serveral different Akira Kurosawa titles.
My father knows of Beat Takeshi from "Zatoichi" and "Brother."
Most of those people I knew of before I really even started watching anime.
>the average american won't know puffy. kids probably would, but they would know them as cartoon characters, not a band.
Yep.
Although, if you want to talk about Japanese people most people wouldn't know about, I would say mangaka and and J-pop/J-Rock singers. Most wotaku know who Akira Toruyama, Rumiko Takahashi, Morning Musume, etc, etc is. Heck, "Utada" was even released as an American artist for a while.
No-one I know knows what the fuck a puffy ami-yumi is.
And I like it that way
