I wanted to buy my girlfriend some manga, and took a month to work up the courage to go into the Shoujo Manga section of our local Kinokuniya Bookstore (San Fransisco, CA, USA). But she's very otaku, and I know many women who are otaku, which is good. I heard the ratio of male/female gamers in the USA was very close to 50/50, too.
