Back a bit more to the 70s and we have Leiji Matsumoto classics like Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Uchuu Senkan Yamato. You also have those classic mecha series like Gundam and Macross (yes, I know that's an 80s title, but it's still old enough to be called a classic). And lets not forget the godfather of all hackjob animes, Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets, G-force)
