I don't think I've ever seen fansub groups release sub files separately from the video and audio streams. Why don't they do that? Maybe they release them where I'm not looking?

It's because SCRIPT STEALING!!!!!!!!

Also, except for us, even the groups that do softsub mkv still insist on hardsubbing random signs and doing %(%)(%)(&* karaoke.

I'll try to do it from now on for any TV-source show we do. Except we're really tired of doing those, so it'll be a while.

There are a lot of groups that do that. It's called a "soft sub", look for that.

Funny how raw stealing is ok but script stealing isn't.

raw stealing?

raws are usually put up for download.

Anther reason why sub files aren't usually released seperately is because not everyone has the filters to play it.

The only reason that makes sense is that by hardsubbing, you are creating a derivative product, which is slightly more defensible to distribute, in the fansubbing gray area. Distributing the raw is much more obviously simple copyright infringement. Plus, distributing subtitle files makes it easier for bootleggers to include them on pirate DVDs.

And >>5, I think >>4's point is that subbing groups have no rights to use the raw files, and thus it is pretty hypocritical to complain if somebody uses their translations without permission.

Yeah, I thought so as well. But then technically, it would be the raw uploaders who are raw stealing.

And yeah, anti-bootlegger actions is one of the main reasons as well. Bootleggers will end up charging for work that they did and made available for free.

No, everyone who can play anything can play them.

The bootleggers have a much easier time selling .avi fansubs on ebay than .mkv, because of DVD encoding software compatibility.

We're talking mass-produced DVD bootlegs here, not some teenager selling stuff on ebay.

Same answer. I don't think they would take the opportunity to copy those since they already can't speak English enough to know how to do it.

What kind of idiotic prejudiced argument is that?

One powered by an Astro Boy 2003 dvd I found in a secondhand bookstore!

Also, not even the people who run convention video rooms can figure out how to show mkv files.

That's why I don't go to anime conventions.

Aren't softsubs fairly common for fansubs in chinese and other asian languages?

>>15 technically, the law doesn't call it stealing. The legal term is copyright infringement.
