Neither NHK ni Youkoso nor Ichigo Mashimaro were ever big hits with the otaku. They were definitely aimed at the otaku, but that doesn't mean they were actually accepted.
FMP: Fumoffu was a Kyoto Animation series, and I guess you could list almost any Kyoani series as an otaku series.
Darker than Black does have a bit of a following, and it's a decent show, but it's hardly a major otaku show. Ergo Proxy was pretentious garbage that nobody cared about.
