Clannad (25)

This is addressed to a person who wrote of clannads superiority as both a game and an anime.
I fought hard to place my faith that kanon was a brilliant game and excellent adaptation and reasoned that the characters were more in depth than they were given credit for.

A number of months ago, I finally finished Clannad and was astounded with it.
OUt of boredom a few days ago, I went back over Kanon pc and then the series and found that while intriguing, The characters lacked a feel which I originally liked about them.

Come to realize this was because I had finally seen a truly superior visual novel and its anime adaptation (Still ongoing. if you wanna talk about episode 16 of after story go ahead) And found myself thinking "The chars in Kanon are good.. But looking back, they really cannot hold a candle... "

So yeah, pride aside, you were right. Clannad was superior.

Also.. no other anime has EVER used a choir during a birth (or even portrayed a birth in a non hentai manner...).
For that, dues are given.
Clannad, Key, you have earned my respect.

The only negative thing I will say about the TV adaptation so far is that the second season ED is totally wrong for it, and that this has never been more clear than at the end of episode 16. "Torch" is a nice enough song, but it just doesn't fit the mood of After Story at all. I've seen several people suggest that they should have used it for the first season, and saved "Dango Daikazoku" for After Story, and I tend to agree. KyoAni have done such masterful work with the rest of the series (and with the other Key adaptations), that I am really surprised and, frankly, disappointed that they would do such a poor job on this one point.

>>3
IMO, the Key games are better off without the H-scenes. Key themselves admit that they don't contribute anything to the plot, and as such I find them disruptive. Call me crazy, but I don't think crying and fapping mix well.

>>6 I agree wholeheartedly.
There I was crying man tears then all of a sudden shining happy song plays on and on.
I think the only reason they decided to keep the torch ending was because the series isnt over and it would seem off kilter to use a dedication credit roll.

But whatever to each his own.

It is kind of funny though, if you look at the context of the game, clannad seemed to do very very very well WITHOUT the H scenes. Kanons 18+ version seemed to have the H scenes just... wherever they felt like having them and with the removal for the all ages version, there was almost no real change in enjoyability.

To say it did better without the H scene might actually be correct.

And, I am going to regret saying this when Non H visual novels REALLY kick off in the US but... the games without the pron and just tell a good story tend to be the best.

I will of course have to retract this statement whenall the scensters of anime come in and go all "Oh I like KEY because they have the most superior visual novels and they dont even use H scenes" At which point I will resume clutching crescendo and Kana Imouto (which used H scenes tastefully, especially in Crescendo with the raep bit. It seemed to fit the main characters wish to DESTROY the girl in question)

And , for the humor bit, I dunno bout you but I ALWAYS cry when I fap.

jk of course.

>I think the only reason they decided to keep the torch ending was because the series isnt over and it would seem off kilter to use a dedication credit roll.

They did for episode 10 of Kanon, though, which was a similar scenario.

I suppose the difference is that that case was the end of an arc from the game, and this wasn't. Still, it's not even just this episode: "Torch" is all wrong for the whole season. It's wrecked the mood at the end of far more episodes than not, so far.

>>8 I dunno what they are getting at with torch TBH. I noticed it shares no common thread with any of the osts (unlike the opening theme which does, track number and disk though, I cannot recall)

Episode 10 of kanon happens to be my favorite as I favored Makoto over most of the other chars save for mai. Mostly because Mais route was the first one I accomplished when I originally played through (well before my english patch)

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Maybe it was in Lia's contract that she would get the ED as well as the OP, and they couldn't find anything else from the OST that would fit, so they just made something up. Who knows?

I must say that the end of episode 17 almost made up for it. I still think a special ED would have suited 16 better (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one on the DVD), but I'm not as unhappy about "Torch" in general, now.

Makoto was my clear favorite - I not only cried, but actually sobbed uncontrollably during that episode. To this day it's the only anime that has made me sob (After Story 16 made me cry, but not like that). Mai (Yukari Tamura FTW!) was right up there for me, too, though, along with Ayu.

Makotos story didnt make me sob as much cry a little.
TBH Kana Imouto was the only one which fully led me to sob like a little girly man when I finished it.
Despite the heavily implied themes (though it kinda took a safeway out) it was one hell of a powerful story disguised as a pron game.

The early part of ushios story involving tomoya meeting his granmother and her relating the story of tomoyas dad did strike a chord with me if only because I have been through a similar situation.

ADVs dubbing cannot handle pronounciation properly...

Just sayin.
otherwise the dubbing isnt all bad. save for a few annoyingly high pitched voices.

I personally would like to see them bring a bunch of 17-18 year olds on for the main chars and adult types for the supporting chars.

Least it wouldnt sound contrived...

>ADVs dubbing cannot handle pronounciation properly...

Well, since they're not dubbing it, it shouldn't be a problem. They're releasing it subbed-only.

Originally, they were going to dub it and release it in the usual singles with an optional artbox, with the first volume due in April, but economic and/or financial considerations have led to them nixing the dubbing and releasing it as two half-season sets instead, and bumping up the release of the first set to early March.

ADV's dubbing used to be better than it recently has been. Until 2005 or so I would have considered them the best dubbing studio, but now that honor probably goes to FUNi (who used to be among the worst) or to Bang Zoom! Entertainment.

>I personally would like to see them bring a bunch of 17-18 year olds on for the main chars and adult types for the supporting chars.

Using young actors to play young characters has had mixed results, when it's been tried in the past. I suspect that's partly because the talent pool of young voice actors is much smaller here than in Japan.

My only beef with funi these days only has to do with the final episodes of shuffle. Unreasonably high pitched voices are unreasonably high pitched. Simple as that.

Kyous path was full of typical high school drama.
Pardon me for a second but I will sum it up:
"Oh Hai tomoya, I like you alot but my sister has a small crush on you so I am going to set you up but be obvious about my feelings for you. then I am going to make you second guess yourself while telling you not to waver from what I did for YOU despite how you really feel! Then just because I am such an awesome woman I am going to cut my hair and then tell you so that you think I am really my sister telling you. I know you are smarter than that but you REALLY have to play along for this one otherwise you and my sister will break it off and we will be together and we all know that will never happen hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha-don't touch my hair....."

Literally...
Thats her story in a nutshell.

o_O i shit on your clannad, if you want something like real drama, try paradise kiss, or nana, discuss not-wanted pregnancy and subjects of real life, without behind so fucking fan service.

Does anime really need to be realistic? I agree with you that Clannad did not discuss in-depth real life issues, but I think Keys did a good job of bring out the idea of family in the game.

Lol... you are right but I still want to watch Kyou route animated... http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-04-12/clannad-after-story-last-dvd-to-include-kyou-arc

I agree I want to see Kyous arc animated. It would be kind of funny if they decided to do a tomoyo after anime as well.
I heard about the animated kyou route some time ago though so that is really not news.
