i'm sick of how all i read are "classics" from 20+ years ago. please recommend me some good books written in the 21st century. i don't care about the subject matter, long as it's well-written.

There are plenty. What genres appeal to you?

pretty much anything with an interesting story. generic fantasy with elves and stuff is a turnoff i guess

If you're after non-generic fantasy, A Song of Ice and Fire and The Death of a Necromancer are both fairly good. The former is closer to low fantasy/historic fiction, while the latter is a blend of Sherlock Holmes' Moriarty in a steampunk setting.

Shards of Honor wasn't too bad either, despite the horribly cheesy title. It's one of the very few space opera/military science fiction that doesn't stink.

I'm still working on Kushiel's Dart which still seems promising, but I'm not sure whether it's worth recommending yet. So far it looks like it falls under alternate timeline.
