Selling second hand consumer electronics goods is a pretty common and somewhat lucrative trade to engage in. For the seller, he gets extra funds for his future purchase. For the buyer, he gets a used but still working product at a price he can afford. A win-win situation that is not shared by electronics manufacturers. As a result, effective April 1, 2006, ALL electronics products manufactured prior to 2001 will no longer be allowed to be sold in the second hand market.

That sucks. No, corporations suck!

But I smell something wrong here...why did you post this in DQN rather than the news or tech section?

I'm sure the several dozens of used-electronics-stores in Akihabara are just ecstatic about this news.

All other articles originate from that same Akihabara News page.
No main Japanese online papers report this.

2nd hand electronics sales will NOT soon be illegal in Japan
February 22nd, 2006 by Mutantfrog

Akihabara News, Engadget, and probably a number of other blogs have posted a completely misinformed and alarmist claim that Japanese law will soon make it illegal to sell used electronics. First the alarmist claim, and then the explanation of why it is about 80-90% incorrect.

What the fuck is that? It's maybe 5% incorrect: selling used stuff is illegal except in a few corner cases and situations. Alarmist my ass. I'll be damned if I ever visit a country whose laws are this fucked up.

This law was made because some shithead fried himself using a 20 year old electric heater. Now all used electronic equipment must pass government testing.

> government testing

no. Just simple tests done by the shop.
