It's a LOT easier to use a box. I made it from scratch once and it was pretty hard to thicken it using wheat flour.

For spicyness, just add a whole bunch of crushed red peppers. You can see it bubble ominously after that. If you eat it regularly, you really should think about adding tofu. It's a neutral taste and provides good nutrition.
