not-fantasy 2D isometric TBS/RPG games (12)

ITT we discuss not-fantasy 2D isometric turn-based strategy games with RPG elements. X-Com, Fallout Tactics, Jagged Alliance, Laser Squad, etc.

X-Com AKA UFO series are really awesome, I like Terror From The Deep the best. Of course it doesn't have much RPG elements, but as strategy game it really excels. Building, researching, manufacturing, buying, equipping, so much win! What makes X-Com so special is really tight combat. You never know where those bastard aliens are hiding, great caution must be taken while moving, otherwise you'll die and won't even know who killed you. I hate how in most games player characters have much grater line of sight then enemies. BTW google UFO2000!

Fallout Tactics is quite nice. I really love Fallout 2, so I may be biased, though you can't deny that it is one of the most beautiful games ever created and that character creation system is incredibly detailed and thorough. I feel a little disappointed, because it's pretty much linear Fallout with more than one character and vehicles, but I shouldn't, this is very good game, it's just that it could have been so much more then just good.

Anyway, what about you ? Which one is your favorite ? Has anyone here played Shadow Watch ?

I played UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object) for about half an hour once! It was good for a laugh.

X-Com is excellent except for the really cumbersome pre-mission loadout screen.

I think that for all their rough graphics, combat mission 2 and 3 are some of the best TBS's out there (if you like ww2 simulation, of course).

Apologies. I forgot about the '2d' part.

Front Mission reminds me of Faselei! for Neo Geo Pocket, another game that fits quite well in this topic. Shame it was so short, but I would recommend it anyway, it's really fun, original and challenging. Basically you just go from one mission to another, in between you can take training mission to earn some extra money and find special items. What you probably haven't seen in any other game is that you can buy moves ( move, turn, run, strafe, etc. ) for your mech, of course also weapons and auxiliary equipment. Battle system is pretty simple, but as I mentioned very fun. Multiplayer would be insanely awesome...

I think I will try to find Front Mission, it looks interesting. Which one would you recommend: Front Mission or Front Mission 2 - Gun Hazard ? Is there another 2D version ?

You mean that screen, after you go to site and before your turn starts, where you equip your team ? What's cumbersome about it ? I even find it quite interesting ! And it's not like it takes a lot of time...

And I don't think it has anything to do with RPG. ( ? )

It distributes all the equipment you've loaded onto the transport near-randomly. Thus you end up with some people loaded down with gear and some with nothing but a peashooter. Your weak but fast scout might end up lugging an autocannon better suited to a trooper with high strength. You can't simply push a button to strip all the soldiers, so you have to go piece by piece. The trooper's inventories aren't remembered between missions, so you have to do it all over again each time you start.

I like Front Mission and games like this. Buf my favorite of all time is Wachenroder. Anime Style Gfx, 2d, Good Story and everything. Its only available for JP Saturn though, but there is a good Translation (i found it at gamefaqs when I got wachenroder.)
I Love this game!
