Well, I havn't seen much action regarding RTS's lately, and I've started to really like them despite my skill = suck++;
So I decided to make a thread for us to talk about all sorts of RTS related stuff. Like, what rts's does everyone play still, even if they're old, Favourite strategies, arguments about race cheapness, new RTS's. Should be fun.

Anyway, currently, I play Dawn of War as either the Eldar or (more recently) the Chaos Space Marines, Warcraft 3 as the Undead, Supreme Commander (although I'm going to have to stop soon since late-game I lag like I was trying to play doom on an abbacus). I also really like Age of Mythology, though I don't know why.

Btw, has anyone ever noticed how Dawn of War has like almost No Faq's, especially in comparison to games like Warcraft 3, starcraft, etc? is there just not as much strategy involved in DoW, or is there not enough variety to warrant many individual race faqs?

I'm currently playing C&C3, but I suck at it because I always lose the very first time-limited mission in the GDI campaign. I get 15 zone troopers to go up there and destroy the three Nod power plants, buying me a little time, but they just rebuild the power plants. And by the time I have another 20 Zone Troopers ready to blow up their new power plants and possibly take out the nuke site as well, they've produced enough ground units to slaughter all my troopers before they get far enough. And then the time runs out, and the mission's failed.

Like I said, I suck.

Since Starcraft II got announced, I've pulled out my Broodwar CD and started playing that again. Watching some of the professional matches stimulates my interest, and makes me want to work up my lamentable APM. I'm pretty much a newb, practicing against the AI to limit the pwnage I receive from humans, but it's still fun. What a great game; I think it's one of the 10 best RTS's ever, and better than any "Age of" game.

yeah, you're propably right. I was a huge fan of starcraft, and I find it hard to think of which race I like more! unfortunately, I never ponied up the dough for broodwar. Now I find it hard to justify going back to it after being pampered by the newer games that allow movement/construction queues, repeating build factories, and simpler resource collection. I still think my fav game of all was Warcraft 3. not only did they have awesome races, great balance, cool graphics, and a good story, but their game creation engine was just SO GOOD that you could make ANYTHING! still, nothing beats a whole crapload o' guns.

I played age of empires 3 for sometime but now I'm back to age of kings (aoe2 expansion) playing with friends because the game is just better and people don't use as lame of strats. But the 2nd aoe3 expansion looks good, (it's all asian shit).

Everyone should use commander rushing as their only strategy. Actually even in real life, it should be that way. That would be hilarious.

somehow I think that having your commander just haphazardly running at the enemy is a poor idea.

Commander:"Hmm... Hey, wot? You say there's an enemy encampment through the forest?"
Scout:"Indeed, Sir. Shall I rally the troops to squash them before they become a problem?"
Commander:"No no, it is unecessary to wake the boys" grabs rifle "I'll handle this - shant be long! Taa!" takes off

Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!

my appologies - you are quite correct, sir.

speaking of RTS's, i FINALLY found a copy of Advanced Wars Dual strike in a store, and bought it immediately. I know it's not really an rts, but it does have an rts-like mode called "combat". i made the mistake of making too make useless, useless recons... I'm on lvl 5, the hardest one, with one tank and one mech...

otherwise, i love the game - everything is so improved ^_^ using new sprites would have been nice, but oh well, why fix what ain't broke I guess.

is there anyone else out there that plays as the necrons? man, they have to be one of the most satisfying races to play as (along with the chaos - once you get past the annoyingness of the cultists, anyway)
Necrons just refuse to die, and when they do they can just be brought back to life or reassembled with tomb spiders. when you finally get that monolith fully activated it is a satisfying thing to watch, the nightbringer absolutely DESTROYS infantry and looks pretty freakin sweet. and who couldn't love the cheesy 50's-space-flick green lasers?

totally. But those damn IG get my damn goat, they do. I swear, I was playing the comp in single player, and they attacked one of my reasonably fortified areas. I figured, "hey, i'll just box them in their base, and fortify the rest of the map!" nuh uh. in like 2 minutes they somehow controlled like half the friggin map! I reloaded the map and this time IMMEDIATELY sent out my honour guard and other troops to look for their base and suppress them... AND THEY STILL MANAGED TO MAKE SEVERAL BASES. not to mention almost destroying one of the sattelite bases I was trying to make. luckily i have my monolith to kickass with. There were just TOO MANY requisition points on that map...

I've played a few RTSes, but none of them have really appealed to me. Except for Age of Empires II. There's just something about that game that I absolutely love. I still play it sometimes, even though I have no friends that still play it and it's so old.

>>12 leave a throw away email and possibly we can work something out. I play with a group of friends on hamachi and we have a blast. we often bring in people to play with, it's a ton of fun.

I think RTS games are some of the most fun games out there. There's nothing quite like it. So many things can happen in a single game, and it's pretty much impossible to defend yourself against all strategies with just one strategy of your own, so it takes a lot of time, balance, and foresight to be good at them.

>>14 I agree. RTS games make you really sit down and think through a game.

I'm horrible at them, but I still think it's a pretty good game concept.

yeah, i'm pretty aweful too. actually, i got fairly good at Dawn of War, but when I wrnt back to Warcraft 3 for a bit, I blowed chunks even worse because i was so used to just reinforcing squads that i never built enough units.
