Syobon Action (Mario Clone) [PC] [VIDEO] (21)

In the tradition of Super Maryo World, now there's another platform game based on 2ch AA characters. This one's called Syobon Action, and you may have seen it on Youtube.

Syobon Action is a sadistic platform game set in levels that look, at first glance, like levels from Super Mario Bros. But nothing is what it seems here. Benign objects become deadly. Deadly objects become deadlier. Even the power-ups have turned into traps. You're not going to be able to coast through any part of this game.

Game download here (I haven't gotten it to work on my American Win2K box):

Youtube link here of the first level being completed, in case you just want to watch the mayhem.

(You can find walkthroughs for all four levels from here.)

The source is also available from that Geocities page, and for your convenience, I've extracted the one think every Youtuber wants: the taunts that appear when you die. Here they are in the original Japanese, if anyone wants to translate them for the rest of us, or at least mouse over them with Rikaichan like me.

What the hell are the controls? I figured out that "Prece Enter" means to press Z. Now I can jump but I can't move. Tried everything obvious including pressing the any key. ;-)

You got it installed? Awesome!

As for the controls, maybe ask the YouTube folks. I think it comes with docs in Japanese, for what it's worth.

Yeah the arrow keys don't work, which is why I asked. Obviously those were the first ones I tried.

Same here, Firefox on OS X, neither the arrow keys nor the numpad work in the applet.

It opens for me, and then closes.

Safari on OSX here, no arrows.

Which is weird because if you write your applet normally then the arrows will just work. They must have gone out of their way to fuck with it somehow.

Part of the difficulty of the game is installing it.

It adds a layer of difficulty to SMB1's "blow on the cartridge" ritual.

You don't install an applet.

I'm working with a translator on this game. I'm not sure what's causing the arrow keys problem, but I'll check it out.

funny but still too easy. some other clones or SMB NES Hacks are much harder. but anyway, i will play again and try loosing fewer lives.

Well, even if it's not the hardest, it's still the funniest so far.

Anyone seen Many-Worlds Mario?

Yes, awesome. Look for "Averaging Gradius" too, a very different approach of a pretty similar idea giving fascinating results.
