First Person Games and Motion Sickness (9)

Does anyone else start to feel sick when they play first person perspective video games like shooters (Day of Defeat, Counterstrike, HalfLife), and some role playing games (Oblivion)?

I'm not a fan of shooters but I do like role-playing games, but I find myself unable to make any true progress in Oblivion because soon into playing I start to feel sick. I also don't get motion sickness from other activities - I'm absolutely fine on cars, buses, boats, trams, and trains.

For those whom do experience this (or am I alone?), what do you do to prevent it? Preferably, without some kind of medicine.

I don't suffer from this, but my fiance does. basically, she has to either limit her exposure to short periods, only watch me play (which takes longer for the nausea to set it), or take gravol. regular gravol doesn't work for her, but the ginger herbal variety works fine.

Try to tweak the FOV in the games (usually decreasing it), it helps some people who suffer this. Also tune down the motion blue if there is any.

I have the same problem. I can't even watch people play, it isn't as bad to play myself. One thing that helps me is to adjust the settings so I can see my character. It is when I can't see her that I REALLY get sick.

Third person games get me. Not too bad, but sometimes when the angle gets all screwy it kind of hurts.

First person games are fine for me. Unless I'm watching someone else play. I guess its cause I don't know which direction they are gonna go, and my brain tries to anticipate which direction they will go, but they go the complete opposite, which makes me feel dizzy. I dunno its weird. I'm fine playing them though.

Some things that may help:

-Get as further away from the screen as you can. That way, you can easily rest if you feel nausea kick in.

-If you can't get away from the screen, enter >>3. Turn off any Motion Blur or Depth Of Field, and reduce FOV as much as you can.

-Reduce your mouse sensitivity. If it moves too fast, it can be annoying.

-Chew ginger while you play.

And I'm out. Hope it helps.

I would also like to thank you for the advice. Maybe now I will be able to finally finish a fucking metroid prime game for once in my life.
