Startopia doesn't run in Windows 7, what do I do? (5)

So I dug up this old game that I had lots of fond memories of, only to discover that it doesn't run under Windows 7. Its system requirements suggest Win98 and a 600 MHz processor with 32MB video RAM. Do you think it would run fluently on a virtual PC using my dual-core 2200MHz laptop?

If it uses DOS, you can try and use DOSBox.

I made a Win98 virtual machine and had a lot of trouble getting it to work properly. Its a bitch to find drivers compatible with Win98. Granted I might have had more trouble since my native operating system s MacOS.

I think it would probably run in a virtual XP, at least I have yet to find a game made for Win98 that wouldn't run in XP.

I'm gonna sound pretty naive, but how about running it under a different compatability mode?

That's the only way I got the setup program to load. The game itself, unfortunately, quits to desktop without an error message.
