A good country still moving on from isolationist and imperialistic past. Great engineering and hot women.
I imagine Tokyo at night lit up in colourful lights, as well as robed samurai running around fighting each other to the death or committing ritual suicide in the rolling countryside.

A very xenophobic country, refuses to realize that there are other countries in the world other than Japan and the magical USA. Has major social issues (work over-stress, racism towards gaijin, broken imperial dreams, etc.)

So-so engineering since the economic bubble burst. The women are hot, at least.

Culturally interesting, even if you don't go for anime or know about history. I wonder if its social problems are really that much worse than in the US, since the media so often makes everything seem worse than it really is. On the other hand, is it true that some people live in comic book stores?

I've never been to Japan, but here's what I think of when I think of it:

Trains, lots of trains and small, crowded alleyways with airconditioners sticking out at odd angles.

Really ugly postwar buildings that seems to clash with surrounding architecture, yet strangely finds some harmony with the surrounding countryside, usually by reshaping it; lots of restraining walls shaping the terrain for instance.

little ramen-yas and obachans with floppy white hats. Skilled touch typing on cell phones.

cats.

cicadas.

All those Isuzu trucks that have no nose.
Policemen with white helmets.

And of course:
NEETS, Otaku bunka, Akiba, Oden-in-a-can, meido, Gensokyo.

Very interesting culture and art. great to visit and enjoy. People seem very civil and the country safe. A very technophile population combined with a great level of freedom of expression makes it a good place to spot future trends, new ideas. I would gladly live there for a couple of years,...

But the society looks far too conservative to permanently live and raise kids in (society pressure encroaching on personal life, too sexist, nationalistic and xenophobic for my taste). Too much pollution, terrible urbanistic policies (or lack of them). Also, the political structures seem distant from the individual voter, and people may be far too powerless with respect to bureaucracy, politicians and corporations. Finally the educational system, while moderately good, seems far too much bent on crushing and uniformizing the individual, instead of caring for his personal development (basically, I think nothing beats Europe in terms of quality of life, although possible contenders could be Canada and New Zealand, but I don't know enough to have an educated opinion on those countries)

I think Japan is pretty broken in major ways like other people have been saying, but what country isn't?

I've always considered learning Japanese, but never started, because I thought the xenophobia you'd face if Japan would make it pretty useless.
Also, all the horror stories about how the Japanese police can fuck you up for life are pretty scary - how the officers consider everyone guilty until proved innocent, and detain you for weeks until you sign a confession that can't be overturned in court.
I think you'd have less trouble being a turban-wearing muslim in Texas than being white in a small Japanese city.

The center of all major illustrated art, fashion, and product design coming out of the world today. China and Korea merely imitate its art; now the US is starting to imitate too, and poorly. Unlike in the West where people constantly complain about their work, Japan people do their job efficiently without complaining. But there is a backlash, too, because of the traditional Japanese culture being eroded. Also, Japanese politics is run by rote and has very little energy being put into it, even when there is clear injustice or corruption. But overall, because of the strong natural beauty and art, a great place to live.
