hey everyone. 3 friends and i are planning on taking a trip this december to either of these places. we're only not sure which is better. we've never been to either of them before, but they just strike us to be really beautiful and historic. i think they will also take around the same amount of money as they will be pretty expensive.

this is gonna be our first trip. which place do you recommend more for us first-timers?

I would say you should go to london first; less of a language barrier. Unless you are fluent in Japanese. Then go to Japan.

I think Japan is better because if I'm going to get lost somewhere, it would be much more fun if I couldn't properly speak the language. So I went to Japan on about half a year's part time study. Enough to talk to cab drivers but not enough to cope with the average guy on the street. Finding places was great fun, and that's what travel is about. Well for me, anyway.

London is fun for approximately 2, maybe 3 days at a push. After that, it turns into every other huge shitty megalopolis.

That's the Isle of Wight, my old Empire.

>>6 there are subtle differences in the language in the UK that can bite a yankee in the ass. but at least you'll be able to ask directions and get around OK most of the time.

The exchange rate is a bit more favorable in Japan.

London is a bit boring for travellers. If you just want to have some fun however it's alright.
I mean, how great will the weather be in December!

Joking aside, I think you should go some more place in the UK, not only London.

Japan only if you're adventurous enough and ready to get a lot of weird stares, assuming you don't look or speak Japanese that is.

Actually, if you're short on cash then I'd say Japan - its far cheaper, even though thing s are a little more expensive than in the US. Both countries are great though - London has a lot more grandiose places to see, but in Japan every single block is like a new adventure. Both places are as fun as you make it - but plan your trip ahead of time, as time is always precious.
Have fun ^^

Hi, op here. I haven't been to this site for awhile and completley forgotten that I have posted here. But since the last time I posted, I had decided to go for London. At that time, it seemed the more logical choice. It seemed more interesting and there wouldn't be that big of a cultural shock.

Well the thing is now I'm kinda over London... and I haven't even been yet (I am going in June). And I wish I had gone to Japan instead. I actually was looking online to see if they have some special fares, but considering it's summer and I am doing it sort of last minute, it looks impossible. So I guess I'll leave Tokyo for another time.

Or is there any way to travel to Japan without breaking my bank? I will surely live frugally, eat frugally, and buy not too much things, but overall.... is it still doable at this point?

Don't know about going to Japan cheap, but make sure you buy a JR Pass so you can ride pretty much all the trains for free. It doesn't work for the Tokyo Metro but it'll save you a ton if you like to ride the Shinkansen.

Oh yeah, be prepared to walk. A LOT.
