I generally tend to choose a character I like when cosplaying.
Nothing sucks more when trying to choose a costume when you don't even like the character.
Ebay is good for costumes if you don't have access to any good stores.

At least at first, try dressing up as a character that you think you look like and that you're really familiar with. Then you'll have a better idea in your head of what to do to make yourself more like that character. I never spend a lot on costumes, I think about what I need for the outfit and accessories and try to find as many things at home as I can. It's fun and it keeps the cost down.

Well the greatest tip is to at least KNOW what and who you are cosplaying as- it's kinda scary to see people cosplay and have no idea to what character they are cosplaying as. Also- when you do attend a con. Always bring supplies to help out with costume rips and prop failures. Also- it's more fun to cosplay more then one character.

Cosplay now is easier to find- and now you can even buy them premade. So have fun.
