One of the top ten manga the scanlation community is doing right now, IMHO. Definitely my favorite. It's also a nice change from the usual material.

Of course, coming from a hentai background, I have to wonder if Alpha will ever have fun. Har! (Admit it, you've also wondered...)

It's worth noting that Manga-Project also does Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.

I was actually a bit shocked when someone made a YKK doujin :(

5 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-06 13:54 ID:z0GljLaA [Del]

Also one of my all-time favourites. Serialized in Afternoon, where many of my other favourite manga run, such as Narutaru/Shadow Star and Genshiken. Milk Closet also ran in Afternoon, as did much of Riichi Ueshiba's work, like Yume Tsukai.

I wish I could find somewhere to get the actual magazine.

Someone made a doujin for YKK? o.o;

Well, after noticing that there were Naruto doujins (aaah, my eyes!), I decided there's doujins for everything.

A lot of awesome series run/ran in Afternoon. Yokohma Kaidashi Kikou, Blame, Endo, Blade of the Immortal, Ah! Megami-sama (yes, I suck), etc, etc. If they released it in English I'd definitely buy it.

Probably won't happen any time soon, but Kodansha appears aware that the popularity of manga is increasing outside of Asia.

http://www.kodanclub.com/ is a pretty good hint that they are aware of it, yes, but sadly they've been slacking off with updating that site for some time now.

It's amusing when the doujin artists are considerably better than the original mangaka. Want to bet the actual Naruto manga might be worth looking at if CCC replaced the mangaka?

Which reminds me, the mangaka for Naruto overuses fish-eye lens effects. Interesting feat the first time, quite annoying the rest.

Time to revive this thread to give a bit more of a permanent home to the YKK geography lesson:

Most of YKK takes place on the Miura peninsula, south of Yokohama. Remember to correct for higher sea levels!
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.179982,139.639664&spn=0.123694,0.187540&hl=en (scroll straight north to get to Yokohama).

Alpha's cafe seems to be somewhere on this cape:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.201586,139.611425&spn=0.030915,0.046885&hl=en

The cruise-missile fireworks probably took place out on this bay to the north:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.302167,139.541473&spn=0.030877,0.046885&hl=en

The Northern Town, where Alpha goes to watch the lights come on, would most likely be here along the northern short of Miura:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.269308,139.694595&spn=0.061779,0.093770&hl=en

The sand-covered seaside road that Sensei and Ojiisan ride down in one of the flashback scenes seems to be here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.198781,139.673653&spn=0.061833,0.093770&hl=en

If you want to do your own geographical research, I recommend looking out for the brief glimpses of maps in the manga, and also the street signs in the backgrounds of a lot of the views of roads. Post your finds!

Right, I just played around with Google Earth for a while, and did some more organized research about the locations in Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. The first draft of the results can be found here:

http://wakaba.c3.cx/ykk/ykk.kmz

You can either load that up in Google Maps, or you can use my new toy, an online KML/KMZ file viewer using the Google Maps API:

http://beta.4-ch.net/kmlview/kmlview.pl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwakaba.c3.cx%2Fykk%2Fykk.kmz

This covers what I could figure out from volumes 1-10. Many entries are somewhat uncertain, and are marked with (approx) for locations that I only know roughly where they are, and (wild guess) or (?) when I'm just guessing from insufficient clues and/or intuition. There are probably more locations that can be identified from the first ten volumes, so if you have a copies of YKK and Google Earth handy, and feel obsessive enough, feel free to make corrections and additions! I'll be working through the later chapters at some point, too.

Unsolved questions and mysteries:

  • Where exactly is Café Alpha? I've got a guess that I think is very good (especially if you compare the high-res footage available only in Google Earth with the big view here: http://ykk.misago.org/Volume1/26-27), but I am not entirely sure yet.
  • And where exactly is the viewing spot that people like to go to watch submerged Yokosuka? It appears in several chapters, starting with 22 - Yokosuka Cruise. I've got the rough position for that, too, but it'd be nice to know the exact spot. It probably exists today in some form.
  • Where does Alpha go to fire her gun in chapter 95 - Green? The sign implies that it is a US military area (there's a big navy base in Yokosuka), and the backgrounds show some barracks and a tower that seem to imply that Ashinano has some specific location in mind, but I can't figure it out from just those clues.
  • Where is the Sandy Beach that appears in a lot of chapters, starting with 14? I've got a guess, but it's pretty uncertain.
  • And of course all the other locations marked as guesses are also unsolved mysteries, plus the locations I didn't even bother to try and place.

20 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-12-15 01:51 ID:Heaven

Added some locations from later chapter. New mystery: Where is that tower in chapter 129, exactly?

21 Name: kGo 2006-01-09 13:35 ID:x/78+Bqk

Chapter 15 - Sandy road:

I just went down route 134 and found that the place shown in [v2, p120] looks to be here, a little east of the hammer-shaped point:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.318067,139.418993&spn=0.007774,0.021672

I took a photo:
http://kimoto.cc/ykk/map/r134-gc-enoshima.jpg

Sensei mentions that there used to be traffic jams. The western part of route 134 is known for its heavy traffic, "Enoshima traffic jam".

The road is already a little sandy. There are pine trees planted along the road to prevent sand shifting.

Hmm, I notice the ykk.misago.org forums are down. Well, thanks for that pic - it's a very good fit for the view in http://ykk.misago.org/Volume2/120.

I'll get around to updating the map later tonight.

23 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2006-01-09 18:34 ID:XDpKzUi9

All right, I updated the chapter 66 locations, and chapter 15. Was there anything else?

24 Name: kGo 2006-01-10 16:31 ID:x/78+Bqk

Abandoned park Ayase visits in chapter 106:

I searched the net and found a page that shows a photo that looks like the view in chapter 106.
http://www1.odn.ne.jp/dansantokamisan/nanohanakouen.htm

The photo was taken at Nanohana Park, Iiyama, Nagano. (The area is being hit by very heavy snows right now).
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.88241,138.407221&spn=0.002695,0.004174

By the way, the title of chapter 106 is not properly translated in misago.org. The last word of the title is 住人, "person (or people) who lives there", not 主人, "host".

25 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2006-01-11 01:47 ID:Heaven

Hmm, that does look similar, but it's hard to tell for sure. If only there were some more hints...

Also, I notice there's a replacement for the ykk.misago.org forums, but I really don't like them, so I'll stay over here in this thread.

26 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2006-01-11 13:58 ID:XDpKzUi9

And so as not to have this thread taken up by nothing but map disucssion, I'll mention for those who haven't been keeping up that chapter 119-138 of YKK are available here nowadays:

http://cafealpha.org/

And, it looks a lot like it will be ending quite soon.

27 Name: kGo 2006-01-15 17:00 ID:x/78+Bqk

Well, here are some hints.
It's surrounded by hills and mountains. 山あい
It's far enough from Mt. Fuji. 富士山近くのあの道とは違って
The town is not big, not small. 中くらいの町
There is a train station. 駅
There is a river. わりと大きな川
The park is pretty in the evening. 夕方のきれいな公園

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is a better "guess" than Otsuki, which is on Route 20 (甲州街道). Ayase said there's no traffic but I believe Route 20 should have fair amount of traffic. Alpha says Route 413 is a "shortcut" [v8, p83] and can't be driven upon [v8, p80]. I suspect Route 20 would be the most usual way to drive to Hamamatsu from Musashino, in Alpha's world.

28 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2006-01-16 18:07 ID:Heaven

You're right that it's probably a better guess. I'll change it to this one, and keep it marked as a guess.

I'd like to know if the original chapter zips are mirrored anywhere. I personally have up to volume 9, but never got the individual chapter zips after that. And there may be others who'd like to have read the first volumes.

Brushfire - Chapter 75:

Alpha crossed O-Tarumi Pass, came down to Hino,
and watched the fire from the edge of a plateau.

O-Tarumi Pass:

Hino:

There is a plateau called "Shinmei Daichi" in Hino.

I took some photos from the edge of the plateau:

By the way, should we go back to misago.org's forum?

Map updated!

As for the forum, it doesn't matter to me, I check both anyway. The people att ykk.misago.org might be more interested, though.

I don't see how anyone who read chp 139 can be surprised at this :p

37 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-03-01 15:54 ID:Heaven

Not just chapter 139. The story has been working towards this since sometime just after chapter 100. The focus changed from an appreciation of the world in the status quo to the inevitability of change and loss. It became more obvious in the 120s and 130s, and then in the last few chapters the story started making the final big jumps foward in time. The only open question to me was when, not if.
