Manga reading software (50)

This is the perfect place to pimp some more of my software:

http://mangariini.skizzers.org/

Mangariini is a comics reader, designed to be comfortable to use. It is, however, somewhat half-done, as I got to the point where it did what I wanted on my setup, and then sort of lost interest in the project. It does have all the features *I* need, and works just fine on my machine.

It runs on Windows, and can theoretically be compiled on Linux and Mac OS X machines, since it uses wxWindows. I haven't tested this very thoroughly, though.

Sounds great! It's very needed on OS X, if someone compiles it for that, I'm willing to test in. In anycase, I'll give it a look on XP some time later and give you any feedback. Sounds very useful!

3 Name: Anonymous 2004-11-13 02:18 ID:w9ncL2rw [Del]

Jeez.. what dont you make? :P

As a devoted CDisplay user, I'll let you know how I like it.

4 Name: Anonymous 2004-11-13 16:08 ID:5K+tgryQ [Del]

Okay, so I gave it a go.

It'll open a folder of images without a problem, in fact that whole scrolling thing isnt too bad. However, I've opened all kinds of zipped up manga, and it refuses to open it where CDisplay handles it fine :(

5 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-13 18:25 ID:To5SRcrw [Del]

Nope, no support for zipped files. I don't keep manga in zips, so I never needed it.

bump for useful program :o
it works just fine on freebsd 5.3 and is exactly what i needed. there are a few minor annoyances, but since it's public domain, i can fix them myself... maybe. when i find out how to use wxwidgets and what half of the code does ~_~

7 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-14 16:38 ID:A28x7pKQ [Del]

Heh. If you do something particularly interesting, do let me see the source.

added a wxConfigFile; preferences such as window height, width, position and tool/menubar status are stored there.
bugreports welcome, especially since I don't have a chance to test this in windows.

9 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-21 15:57 ID:xiQi/XFA [Del]

That seems very cool, but that archive is apparently pretty broken. I can't get it unpacked, at least.

10 Name: MAD-Leser!r4YvKJpWUc 2004-11-21 17:57 ID:DJ5iom1A [Del]

uh.. that archive was uploaded in ascii mode for some reason. fixed.

11 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-21 20:59 ID:xiQi/XFA [Del]

All right, worked better this time.

I fixed a couple of minor issues (you have to surround strings like _T("string") to get wxWindows programs to compile under Windows), and included a windows EXE:

http://c3.cx/mangariini/mangariini-0.1.1.zip

At some point I'll get the homepage updated too.

Updated with a 0.1.2 version, that has MAD-Leser's updates and some fixes from me (and an option to turn off the config file since some people like to use it from a thumb drive).

13 Name: Anonymous 2004-11-28 14:05 ID:vvZMFhAA [Del]

Would a better idea be to store the config to it in the same folder as mangariini (the root directory of the application) ?

I figured that way people with it on their USB keys could keep their preferences on the go :P

Might be, yes.

For linux, I have this to be one of the best general purpose image viewing programs and a very good manga reader program as well. While it does not read from zips/rars, it does handle the images really well.

For windows, I recommend Irfanview, which while it does not handle zip/rar again, its still a great program for reading manga.

16 Name: hk0!0khonVgaHI 2004-12-08 23:00 ID:r9yRcmTw [Del]

I second IRFanView for windows.
It is very handy... uses a good layout for keys to zoom, pan, rotate, etc.

In *nix I use gqview for manga and pr0n. It could be better for manga in the sense that it doesn't have enough accelerator keys, and it'd be nice if it had an option for a horizontally-scrollable directory preview area at the bottom.

There's not enough screen real-estate to do a left/right side of a page gutter, AND the sidebar with filenames/tnails.

Every *nix image viewer I've used sucked. Badly. :'(

Did you ever use zv?

I thought it was pretty mint. That was back in the days of SVGAlib... sigh.

19 Name: dmpk2k!hinhT6kz2E 04/12/12(Sun)10:19 ID:s+/nB1V+ [Del]

Never heard of zv (I think). I liked zgv though.

If I had to pick one X image viewer that sucked the least, I'd pick xzgv. But it's getting quite long in the tooth and also needs a fair bit of configuration before it's actually decent.

Use an older version then.

i don't know whether waha got my bugreport or not but i'm going to post a workaround anyway.

bug:
mangariini crashes due to a floating point exception when trying to scroll with the mousewheel when actually there is nothing to scroll.

workaround:
view.cpp, line 438: change int dist=-(... to

int WheelDelta = ev.GetWheelDelta();
if (WheelDelta == 0)
WheelDelta = 120;
int dist = - (ev.GetWheelRotation() * ev.GetLinesPerAction() * SCROLL_STEP) / WheelDelta / 2;

this works for me.

26 Name: !WAHa.06x36 05/01/25(Tue)20:32 ID:GEPSf5u0

I got it, but I couldn't reproduce it on Windows. Did this happen in the Linux version?

27 Name: madleser!r4YvKJpWUc 05/01/25(Tue)22:09 ID:SExCWvim

freebsd, gtk+ 1.2 bindings for wxwidgets. so basically, yeah. i didn't try gtk2 though.

28 Name: !WAHa.06x36 05/01/25(Tue)23:41 ID:GEPSf5u0

All right. The GTK version of wxWindows seems to still be a bit rough (doesn't seem to make sense that you'd get a mouse wheel event, and when you ask how far it moved, it says "oh, it didn't move or anything"). But I'll roll that into the next version.

29 Name: madleser 2005-03-24 00:41 ID:GUhAo8VZ

finally got around working on this again.

feedback/help welcome.
wasted half a fucking day to get the goto thing right.. plz roll over and die, c++/wxw... tired.. must sleep..

30 Name: madleser 2005-03-24 01:07 ID:GUhAo8VZ

ugh.. a last test before going to sleep revealed that the goto feature is actually broken.. argh <_< ignore the above post until i fix this.

alright.

http://membres.lycos.fr/madleser/coding/mangariini-0.1.3.tar.gz

CHANGELOG
---------
version 0.1.3
- keybinding surprise! play around with the space and backspace keys a bit.
# ^- should this be user-configurable?
- added "go to next dir" menu entry. on startup or on manual open, all the directory

names in the parent directory of the selected file/dir will be cached recursively
and sorted in alphabetical order. when having reached the last cached dir and
invoking goto_next_dir again, it will jump to the first one. pressing "space", when
at the end of image_list and focussing on the bottom of an image, switches to the next
directory.

D externalized most of 'manga_view::OnChar's switch to 'manga_view::display(int what)'

where 'what' can be (NEXT|PREV|FIRST|LAST)_IMG.

D added 'int manga_frame::cache_dirs(wxFileName& path)'. recursive.
D added 'wxArrayString *dir_array' to manga_frame. see above.
D added global.iDirArrayPos. current position in dir_array.
D manga_view::open() now accepts dirs... dont't know if it did that before =o
D littered the source with #ifdef DEBUGs.
D i forgot.
D search the source for "XXX:" and fix everything plz kthx.
# i don't have a good overview of the source, so i'd appreciate pointing out of code

duplication, etc.

TODO
----
PROBLEMS:
- [ ] loading the first pic in a directory sometimes focusses on last or

     whatever. zomg sorting.

- [ ] trying to load a dir on the cmdline goes wrong when not appending a

     pathseperator (manga_view::open).

PLANS:
- add option to automatically adjust window to cope with image width/height

I love the blatant display of working OSS development ITT. ; )

33 Name: madleser 2005-03-25 23:49 ID:znB6oJir

i do this mostly for my own use. besides, making this public and holding out in hope for other people to join in doesn't hurt =o
anyway, i think this whole thread went somewhat offtopic, so future versions will be sent to waha directly.

the important thing for an image viewer is that it resamples when fitting a page to screen. Irfanview does this nicely in full screen mode. Ability to zoom in on part of a page is also important, again Irfanview does this. I think the only thing that would make me change is something that resampled quiker (I find irfanview a bit slow there), and which didn't reuse the same keys for different functions, which is irfanviews main minus point - for big images you press 'down' and it scrolls down, for smaller images it goes to the next image, it's very confusing.

I've used comix for a while now. It's good, though a bit slow at times and it seems to insist on re-thumbnailing 200-image volumes a bit too eagerly. But in general it's quite good.
