While reading Midori no Hibi and Love Roma, I noticed the authors mentioned in their notes that they had started out in more serious genres like sci-fi or drama, and that it was their first time doing a love comedy. In both cases they seem to regard it as the most enjoyable project they worked on so far, and their respective manga became their best-known work. I wonder if this common at all. Kio Shimoku is another who started in serious works but hit it big with the otaku love comedy Genshiken and its sub-project, Kujibiki Unbalance. Although I don't recall seeing any notes from him in his books about his feelings on the work.
