I doubt whether Americans really understand japanese sound effect.
We even can't understand perfectly it because it is incresing just now.
I don't think onomatopoeias are meant to be translated...
Onomatopoeia are very language based. They're all the same sound, just pronounced differently, based on the language's proclivities. A dog goes "bark Bark/woof woof" in English, but "Wan Wan" in Japanese. Just try barking like a dog, but enunciating it like wan. It still works.
