Winamp 5's media library seems to do pretty much everything iTunes does, without taking up half your screen.

There's a ton of front-ends (just click "clients" on the site)... web front-ends, bash integration, an ncurses client, a bare-bones terminal client, graphical clients, etc.
The idea being the music player just runs as a daemon, like a jukebox, and you use the front-ends to control the playlist dynamically. Pretty tight.
I just did some more investigating: shit, mpd is the bomb.
1) It has a libshout (icecast) output driver. This means you can drive a network of icecast repeaters with this one front end.
2) Input drivers are pretty easy to implement (it looks like it might be straightforward to cut an XMMS plug-in down to fit). Moreover, many of them are net-enabled out of the box, which means you can pass mpd a file, or a URL to play with said plug-in. It will keep URLs in your playlists. Awesome.
3) Imagine pointing mpd at an icecast stream of it's own output... muwahahahahaa....
Unfortunately, no one has coded a SID/SPC/etc... driver yet. Yet
Now that I'm interested... hehehe.

My prime gripe with xmms is it refuses to buffer a file from disk. The developers (hay guyz, you're idiots) claim that's the file-system's responsibility. Tell that to the NTFS driver, kthxbye.
Zinf does fully buffer files, but is amazingly buggy, and a general pain to use.

It feels strange using a Web browser to operate a music player (I'm one of those people who only have one song on the playlist because I'm too indecisive to know what I'd want to listen to after the current song before it's finished). Interesting, though, to effortlessly flick between *chan and music without interrupting my train of thought.

What we really need is something amazing like Foobar2000 ported to *nix. There is nothing out there as capable as Foobar, it would come close to owning the *nix audio world overnight.

Sort of. My gripe is that if I play a 10MB mp3, XMMS won't buffer the entire 10MB. According to the developers, that's the responsibility of the operating system's filesystem and VM. They won't even offer the option (unlike winamp).
I suppose some filesystems do read the entire file into memory, but NTFS certainly doesn't, nor do most other common filesystems. Instead they may read 32KB, 64KB, or whatever. XMMS could at least attempt to prime it by doing a fast sequential read at the beginning, which would ensure the entire file is in the FS cache, but no...
So, what you're left with is file IO every couple seconds. Now, with certain media that's a real PITA. My CDROM never spins down while playing an mp3, for example.

I use xmplay. I like it because it plays music without hating all as much as wa while still letting me use my dx plugin chain.
And outside I use an iAudio M3L 20GB. I like it because it plays ogg and flac and has 35 hrs battery lifetime.
For streams, I use RealAlternative's Media Player Classic.

I downloaded iTunes recently ..
The good : Radio feature is great, you get tons of stations and stuff. The visualizer is neat too. Fun to stare at. The library system is neat, if you can sort all your MP3s well enough.
The bad : Having to make playlists just to copy songs to the iPod is annoying as hell. Why can't I just drag-drop tracks right onto it, and it makes a playlist automatically? It only plays MP3s and Apple's format. No OGG, MPC, APE, CUE support .. what gives? It also takes up 45 MB of memory. Maybe this is justified by having so many features, but probabally not. :P I managed to crash it twice, just using it. Naughty!

If there's one thing I do like about iTunes it's the way you can set ID3 tags. It's so painless compared to everything I've used before to tag lots of files. I moved away from ID3 tags entirely a few years ago because they sucked so much trying to use them, but iTunes makes it nice (I have lots of loose files that often need tagging in a flexible manner).
That's it, though, I still like Winamp. It just plays my music.
iTunes' visualizer looks like something out of circa-1999 WinAmp. I really thought Apple could do better than that.

I use beep-media-player, as it has full unicode support. ID3 sucks so much that the tags are NEVER cross-compitable, so I don't have much of a choice. Files tagged by EasyTAG are showing the way they are supposed to be shown in beep-media-player, but other programs like mpd (music player daemon) doesn't. Vorbis tags are a lot better, but they are not for MP3's. APE tags are neat, but not supported by EasyTAG nor beep. I would probably have to retag EVERYTHING if I ever get an MP3 player. iPod doesn't display my tags correctly. My brother's MP3 player wouldn't display the tags either, but I don't know if that even has support for Japanese tags.

I like Lilith, too. Very easy to make a skin for and properly displays Japanese chacters.
I have issues with players on my work PC (Lilith and Foobar will crash if the machine goes to screen saver) so I ended up going with Winamp with the Japanese localization patch (you can retain English menus, and have Japanese charecters display properly).

I'm looking for a good software mp3 player for linux! Maybe you guys can help me out:
What I want is a minimal player but one that has playlist support. Really just a playlist with a play/pause button attached to it would work. Something like XMMS is nice too. BUT: All the ones I've tried have sucked for various reasons, many of them really stupid and small but impossible to ignore! Check it:
XMMS and beep: Both have broken alt+tab behavior. XMMS doesn't surface unless you release the tab key, and beep only surfaces the main window, stranding the playlist window with no way to get to it other than minimizing everything. :(
mpd/ncmpc: I love ncmpc's interface, but mpd makes me rescan my mp3 directory every time I add something new or change a name or anything! I tend to download a lot of music, and I also have an mp3 player that acts as a portable hard drive, so having to rescan that thing everytime I plug it in after i've downloaded something is an incredible hassle!
mplayer/xine/whatever: I want a playlist window on the window, darn it, and I don't want to have to open it up.
big media center apps like amarok or whatever else: I want something I don't have to run maximized...
snackamp: broken on my machine for some reason. It won't let me add more than one file at a time.
mp3blaster: incredibly unintuitive interface! I literally could not figure it out. Looked nice otherwise.
orpheus: what i'm using right now. But it loads in directories all randomly and not in alphabetical order, which screws up the track order, unless you alphabetize the entire playlist. Plus it takes 7 seconds a huge amount of hard drive loading to switch tracks! why??
In short, I've been working at this for like two afternoons and I'm getting frustrated! Help!

As far as software .mp3 players go, I use Winamp.
My hardware .mp3 player, however, is an Ipod 20GB.
iTunes or mpg123, depending on the computer. Right now, iTunes.
iTunes on OS X with a 20Gb iPod. I let it handle all the file management. Things like smart playlists, rating, album art, OS X integration and iPod integration make it impossible from my perspective to make a better music library/player.
I use Lilith. It is probably Best Sound. Lilith corresponds to ASIO without the introduction of the plug-in.

i don't have an ipod/whatever, mainly because my laptop is portable enough for me and mp3 players with 40+ GB of storage are way too expensive.
I currently use amaroK, and amaroK is actually the reason two of my friends semi-converted to linux.
That said, I think I'll give mpd a shot... wonder if I can get it to run on my storage/server thingy and have it stream all to my laptop and/or Desktop pc... That would be neat.
I use Musicmatch Jukebox (one of those that plays mp3s on computers, so it's not portable) to play my mp3s, though recently I accidentally downloaded the newest Windows Media Player because I couldn't see the corresponding images for http://killthemongoose.satamsonic.com/onepiece/clips/rice.avi . My "I have an outdated version of Windows Media Player, so I'll download the newest version" theory didn't work, and the best guess would be that the file is badly clipped.

foobar2000. I'm not entirely pleased with it but I haven't found a better alternative.
I just got a 20GB Rio Karma. Way cheaper than an equivalently sized iPod or something, and so far I like it. It's one of the few portable MP3 players that does gapless playback. Although the RioStick(tm) is a piece of shit, and its functions would have been much better served by five buttons or something.

Wow...in last years post I was championing the Jet Audio cause. No doubt it's a great player, I still like it, but a year makes a lot of difference. I moved to another country and now I use a different PC, with different speakers, headphones, etc.
Unfortunately, this PC has slightly lower specs than what I had last year. With firefox 2 and photoshop both eating away at the memory, I had to at least try Foobar or no music at all. Of course it doesn't look as good, so it takes getting used to. Just repeat the mantra: "...most players stay in the background anyway".
It does have good points. It does play most files (.m4a and .wma get along fine) and you can mostly customize the way it works by configuring and acquiring plug-ins. I recommend:
Columns UI - i-tunes style playlist display. Way better than the default mess.

I have a Creative Zen Xtra 20gb and Zen Touch 30gb. Both have loose headphone sockets, apparently. So I bought a 60gb iPod used for approximately £152 including P&P. No problems thus far.

Up until now I've been using an ipod mini for nearly two years. I have no problems with it, just wanna upgrade since I'm going overseas soon (thinking it might be cheaper).. But I'm contemplating between a Creative Zen and an Ipod Video.

Creative players are cheaper, at least in Britain. The only problem I've had is that, like I said, both of them developed headphone socket problems after a while - it sounds like the headphones are broken, but it's actually the socket. I've been told that this problem has been rectified in newer models, though. Both the Creative Zen models I have are sort of falling apart - one of them has mixed up buttons (press pause and it skips to the next track, press menu and it queues all tracks for random play etc) and the other has a stiff dial, meaning I can't scroll up, a couple of iffy forward/back buttons and a pause/play button that's come loose and is now facing inside the system.
The only reason I bought the iPod was because it was being sold used at a really good price for the capacity. I've heard that iPod sound quality has its flaws - I have no problems with it considering the price I paid and the fact that I don't hear any problems, but it's worth bearing in mind considering iPods tend to be way more expensive. But the iPod is working fine otherwise and the actual interface is very nice looking (although it's an old model and Creative's newer players look quite snazzy too). I haven't had it for very long so I don't know if it will be as stable in the long term.
If you aren't concerned about video functions and flimsy build quality (granted this might not be a problem with newer models) get the Creative Zen. My friend also buys Creative and hasn't had any of the problems I've described. Maybe you just need to take care of it (both of the players I bought got banged up quite often - fell out of my pocket etc).
Yeah, the Zen seems like more value for money. I was just worried about it being faulty and all because it was cheaper compared to the iPod ("too good to be true" mindset). Also being the mainstream freak that I am, I feel more inclined to get an iPod. I seriously don't know anyone who's gotten any mp3 player besides an iPod, so I can't compare. Lol.

As for the Zen stuff, if you're going to get one of the newer ones, note that they force you to use MTP, which is terrible. Creative's implementation of it sucks for transferring music, or at least it did when they released the MicroPhoto. I'm torn between hating all things Apple and hating MTP. I want UMS damnit. Also, Zen doesn't run RockBox as of yet, which makes me sad.

Amarok. I have a 5G (video) iPod that I use (amarok handles it beautifully) and I have the Rockbox firmware on it too, but I haven't used the rockbox firmware as the last time they updated the SVN build it made the GUI thread freeze mid-song. Waiting on a fix. That being said, the iPod firmware is quite nice, I just like the ability to play Doom on my ipod, as well as not needing iTunes on some random computer i'm sitting at to put music on it. Also flac, although that may not be that big a deal with a portable mp3 player's inherent sound quality issues.
I use Amarok (that's how they prefer to spell it now, they dumped amaroK). Right now I have it set to use the xine engine, even though the Realplayer one is supposedly better, but I can't tell the difference and the realplayer engine can't play flac's. Sometimes I use xmms, which suprisingly has noticably better quality than either of the engines in Amarok.
For portable music I own a Rio mp3 player that was given to me, but a lot of the time I just use CD's too.

if we're talking software, foobar2000 on windows, and a program I wrote myself called FalconPlay on my Atari Falcon.
I use a 512 iPod shuffle, but I am saving up for a Play-Yan micro so I can get a SD card for music and two others for TV/Anime/Movies. Plus, having the mario skin on my Famicom micro will bring things together quite nicely!
For computer, I use winamp. Moved from iTunes after the 7 edition came along. All songs sound scratchy.

I am going to buy a new mp3 player but I keep hearing about this faulty headphone jack, it seems to be a common problem among high-capacity mp3 players.
I have a 20GB iPod right now and the HDD is dieing. It's been about 2 years since I got it and I'm not in the mood to buy another. I was thinking about getting the Zen:M or iAudio X5 b/c of rockbox and wanting to play FLAC.
Zunes suck, end of discussion.

I bought an iPod because I read some seemingly trustworthy review saying its audio quality was really good. A few days later, I found out that I was pretty much duped. Oh well.

Since I'm getting a 4gb memory stick, I will probably use my PSP for music now, but I am getting an iPod as a gift in a few weeks too.
I use a Sansa e280. Pretty solid MP3 player. had it for about 8 months and it hasn't failed me yet. Plus, it has expandable( microSD slot ) memory.
I use iPod Shuffle, and I have an iPod Video but I don't use it as much as the Shuffle. What can I say... I like iPods.
I've had a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB since sometime in 2002 or thereabouts [was still $350 back then D:!]. It was the perfect machine until just about a few months ago when the headphone jack got busted. One of the stereo channels cut out so it was only going through the right speaker.
Instead of bothering to fix it [which was probably possible] I decided to upgrade to a 60GB Zen Vision M, since my 40 GB was running out of space! I think I made a good decision there, because the Zen Vision is fucking awesome. I was a bit wary of videos being hard to see, but the screen is actually really nice. Just don't take the protective plastic off :) mine's still on and I fear the day it gets removed. It just seems kind of delicate compared to my old Nomad. So far it's a really great player though, and the battery life is much improved over the Nomad as well.

i have an ipod Mini 2gen for two years and still working, only need a new battery but i plug and unplug the jack and the sensor everyday and are working and are easy to fix if it fails...

iPod Nano, first generation. It's great, save the battery life. It's horrible.
Other than that, great sound quality, good interface, and of course, it's small. I have having shit in my pockets, so I love having it be so slim.

Thread derailed. I think OP was talking about media software. Winamp here, I left iTunes partially for Winamp's highly rearrangeable interface but mostly because I couldn't stand the thought of using an Apple product any longer.

I found a 4-gig ipod on the ground... Nobody claimed it even though I put up some stuff on a message board, so hey, it's mine now. As for sofware, will people hate if I say mplayer and xine?
No way. At least, I won't. What's wrong with mplayer and xine? I see no reason to hate, or even dislike.
I use mplayer for .wma and .m4a files that my usual player doesn't support. (Though more often I try to just avoid those formats.)

My first MP3 player was this generic small little 500MB MP3 Player from Israel, my step-monster ordered for me off online back in 2005, when we were still on good terms. lol. It was so annoying, and would always come apart lol. It had these crappy little earbuds that came with it that died out in about a week. (As everyone else's did too.) It was supposed to be a graduation present. (I had graduated from 9th grade I think...and my step-brothers from elementary lol.) I remember loading it up with L'Arc~en~Ciel music, and other stuff too.
My second was a Phillips Go-Gear 8GIG, which I still have. I obtained it from a WAL*MART back in 06' as a part of a christmas present from my grandpa. I don't really care for the touch controls though because it is sometimes overly sensitive, and screws up what I am trying to do on the menus alot.
Last year for my birthday I got a 2GIG silver iPod Nano from my mom. To tell you the truth, I really love it. I mean, my 8GIG Go-Gear actually wasn't working at the time, an ex-friend through it into the sink full of water in my kitchen at the time, secretly and spitefully lol. But really, to be serious, I use it 100% of the time, even though I have an 8GB Mp3 player like my Go-Gear, and my 2GB iPod really is enough for me to carry around. I mean, it's 2GB of music. That's plenty. Yea, I have about 18GB on my computer I've ripped from my huge CD collection, but every once in a while I through about 5-10 medium sized playlists on there and that's great for me. ^_^ So I'm happy with my little silver 2GB iPod nano. I named it Toushiro after Toushiro Hitsugaya.

Don't know my generations, but it's a old cheapo iPod 60gb bought used off Amazon.co.uk. Think it was £150 odd quid? Not bad considering it's 60gb.
Also have two Creative MP3s players. Both were prone to malfunctioning and faults - buttons coming loose, not working or doing the wrong thing when you press them, and the headphone sockets have come ajar inside the machine (my first Creative still works if you hold the headphone plug in a certain way, but with the second one I either get sound in one headphone only or none at all).
Seconded. Besides, Zunes are more customizable.

On PC I have Winamp with a FLAC plugin as I keep mainly lossless stuff on disc. I think Foobar is the best player but it doesn't like my OS at the moment, so I'll have to wait till I upgrade my PC
I don't listen to music whilst travelling much, but when I do I just convert a bunch of FLAC stuff into 320k mp3s and stick them onto my PSP so I can game and listen at the same time (custom firmware FTW).

I use a Creative ZEN. The media player that came with it was shit; it felt years outdated and clumsy. I used to use the Creative Mediasource Player that came with my Creative Zen Micro, I loved that thing to death; but I moved computers and have lost the disc it was on T_T So now I use Winamp, which is similar but...cruder?
