iTunes.
I left Winamp, and poorly tagged and organised music, and never looked back. I don't own an iPod, yet. Santa might bring me one, I hope.
Foobar2000
$ mpg123 /mp3directory/* does it :)
iTunes all the way, baby.

Azureus is far from minimal, but it can be pretty much just look like a playlist if you want it. It has usefull features including listening to your directory and automatically adding/removing files as soon as you make a change.

that said, i need a viable alternative to winamp, or some kind of solution at least, i like having all my songs in the same playlist and using 'j' to search, but a 22000 song playlist is kinda resource heavy.
what should i do?
winamp/psp
noob and loving it ;)
Winamp/iPod Mini

Of course, I have a script that types this for me, and can also play other formats using oggdec, dumb2wav, timidity, etc.

I hadn't messed with amarok for various reasons, but decided to give it a try, and it's great! It has the same problem as mpd with the having to rescan half of my collection every time i remount my mp3 player, but since I can just add tracks the normal way it doesn't matter. I believe I've found myself a new mp3 player. Thank you for your help!
20GB 2nd generation iPod and iTunes 5.0. Screw 6.0 and its new retarded DRM.
Quintessential 4.51
rhythmbox on Linux and Gnomad lets me use my Zen Xtra to transfer files without having to resort to windows
i use amaroK and sometimes mplayer on freebsd...
i don't have an ipod/whatever, mainly because my laptop is portable enough for me and mp3 players with 40+ GB of storage are way too expensive.
I currently use amaroK, and amaroK is actually the reason two of my friends semi-converted to linux.
That said, I think I'll give mpd a shot... wonder if I can get it to run on my storage/server thingy and have it stream all to my laptop and/or Desktop pc... That would be neat.
I use Musicmatch Jukebox (one of those that plays mp3s on computers, so it's not portable) to play my mp3s, though recently I accidentally downloaded the newest Windows Media Player because I couldn't see the corresponding images for http://killthemongoose.satamsonic.com/onepiece/clips/rice.avi . My "I have an outdated version of Windows Media Player, so I'll download the newest version" theory didn't work, and the best guess would be that the file is badly clipped.
>>102 Maybe you just need to install a codec such as DivX or some other shit. Just get VLC from videolan.org and your problems should be fixed.
You guys should reaally check out Jet Audio. It features BBE Viva, which totally destroys the others like SRS and winamp's equalizer. It even outclasses DFX!! and it's free!

Does it includes a DFL that would justify switching just for its better HPK, or at least a better JMN support, and goodies like RWP-synch and X-MSA?
Winamp at home, a my mighty Olympus m:robe on the move.
I use an ipod because I'm unoriginal.
I have a 512mb Rio Forge.
Use Winamp for playing your MP3 collection (try windowshade mode docked at the top of screen)
and use WMP for AVI files.
Keeps your current playlist from getting erased.
Try WInamps Mildrop visualization. WOW.
Winamp.
I'm a too frequent user of the **J**ump and **Q**ue function, and I keep changing my mind too often about what I want to listen to, so I usually don't have fixed playlists, but just load my entire 20GB collection of music into the playlist and use Jump and no shuffle to navigate between styles of songs. I also have my music folder neatly categorized by artist in subfolders.
xmms
foobar2000 on Windows, amaroK on Linux. And I play mostly Vorbis and FLAC in them.
I switch around, actually. Most of the time I use iTunes, because I like me podcasts and how its all set up> But sometimes I use Winamp, because that is what I used before iTunes, and it still has a bunch of mp3s that I forgot about. Not to mention some of my favourite shoutCAST stations.
Rhythmbox on Linux. Don't taint yourself with the shit that is KDE-based software. Take a shower for gods sake.

feel free to enjoy your poorly designed ui and lack of features, but please don't try to force them onto other people.
I've used iTunes ever since I got my first mac 5 years ago. Used xmms before that, eww..
60GB Zen Xtra
>>112 ok, so i used to do that a lot with my 100gb collection of music, buuuut, now i have a mac and need something to replace winamp, any suggestions?
foobar2000. I'm not entirely pleased with it but I haven't found a better alternative.
I just got a 20GB Rio Karma. Way cheaper than an equivalently sized iPod or something, and so far I like it. It's one of the few portable MP3 players that does gapless playback. Although the RioStick(tm) is a piece of shit, and its functions would have been much better served by five buttons or something.
Windows Media Player. It plays music and that's all I really care about.
iTunes, because its the default and 've been using it since OS 9
winamp, b/c iTunes is bulky and takes up too much ram and processing power. Also it keeps giving me annoying requests to update my nano, whereas i can just drag and drop, AND copy songs from my ipod onto my computer with winamp and the ipod plugin. Only thing that sucks is lack of asian text support,so all my chinese and japanese song tags are way fuxx0red
question, here: is there anything that's as good as foobar2000 (i'm still not completely sold on it, but it seems decent enough) but doesn't have such a stupid name and icon? i resent having all my audio files represented by some alien/cat thing. yes i could go through and manually change all the icons, but that's not the point. also the name still makes me want to slap someone.
hi it's >>104 here! (i'm also >>106)
Wow...in last years post I was championing the Jet Audio cause. No doubt it's a great player, I still like it, but a year makes a lot of difference. I moved to another country and now I use a different PC, with different speakers, headphones, etc.
Unfortunately, this PC has slightly lower specs than what I had last year. With firefox 2 and photoshop both eating away at the memory, I had to at least try Foobar or no music at all. Of course it doesn't look as good, so it takes getting used to. Just repeat the mantra: "...most players stay in the background anyway".
It does have good points. It does play most files (.m4a and .wma get along fine) and you can mostly customize the way it works by configuring and acquiring plug-ins. I recommend:
Columns UI - i-tunes style playlist display. Way better than the default mess.
Equalizer - presets here http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30832
Resampler (PPHS)
Crossfeed
I just decided that Quintessential Media Player (latest beta version) is completely awesome. Few minor annoyances, but it's in beta anyway, they should get sorted out.
I don't listen to mp3s, winamp for pc listening, my DS for portable listening.
SanDisk Sansa
xmplay - its like winamp was 5 years ago. Ie. good,
Winamp and a 2GB Sansa SanDisk MP3. :3
I love it.
I keep all my pictures of my boyfriend in there along with my music. <3

I have a Creative Zen Xtra 20gb and Zen Touch 30gb. Both have loose headphone sockets, apparently. So I bought a 60gb iPod used for approximately £152 including P&P. No problems thus far.
Winamp. Winamp. Occasionally, Winamp.
iPod nano.
Up until now I've been using an ipod mini for nearly two years. I have no problems with it, just wanna upgrade since I'm going overseas soon (thinking it might be cheaper).. But I'm contemplating between a Creative Zen and an Ipod Video.
Suggestions?
Creative players are cheaper, at least in Britain. The only problem I've had is that, like I said, both of them developed headphone socket problems after a while - it sounds like the headphones are broken, but it's actually the socket. I've been told that this problem has been rectified in newer models, though. Both the Creative Zen models I have are sort of falling apart - one of them has mixed up buttons (press pause and it skips to the next track, press menu and it queues all tracks for random play etc) and the other has a stiff dial, meaning I can't scroll up, a couple of iffy forward/back buttons and a pause/play button that's come loose and is now facing inside the system.
The only reason I bought the iPod was because it was being sold used at a really good price for the capacity. I've heard that iPod sound quality has its flaws - I have no problems with it considering the price I paid and the fact that I don't hear any problems, but it's worth bearing in mind considering iPods tend to be way more expensive. But the iPod is working fine otherwise and the actual interface is very nice looking (although it's an old model and Creative's newer players look quite snazzy too). I haven't had it for very long so I don't know if it will be as stable in the long term.
If you aren't concerned about video functions and flimsy build quality (granted this might not be a problem with newer models) get the Creative Zen. My friend also buys Creative and hasn't had any of the problems I've described. Maybe you just need to take care of it (both of the players I bought got banged up quite often - fell out of my pocket etc).
Yeah, the Zen seems like more value for money. I was just worried about it being faulty and all because it was cheaper compared to the iPod ("too good to be true" mindset). Also being the mainstream freak that I am, I feel more inclined to get an iPod. I seriously don't know anyone who's gotten any mp3 player besides an iPod, so I can't compare. Lol.
Im using iPod Nano 2GB.
foobar2000... Well, I did until I switched to *nix. Now I use audacious because foobar in wine sounds not-so-great.
Why are there no good *nix media players? :(
As for the Zen stuff, if you're going to get one of the newer ones, note that they force you to use MTP, which is terrible. Creative's implementation of it sucks for transferring music, or at least it did when they released the MicroPhoto. I'm torn between hating all things Apple and hating MTP. I want UMS damnit. Also, Zen doesn't run RockBox as of yet, which makes me sad.
Another iPod Nano (1st gen) user here. Rockbox firmware FTW!
> Why are there no good *nix media players? :(
I use Rhythmbox for music and Totem for video, works pretty well for me. What exactly are you searching for?
Amarok. I have a 5G (video) iPod that I use (amarok handles it beautifully) and I have the Rockbox firmware on it too, but I haven't used the rockbox firmware as the last time they updated the SVN build it made the GUI thread freeze mid-song. Waiting on a fix. That being said, the iPod firmware is quite nice, I just like the ability to play Doom on my ipod, as well as not needing iTunes on some random computer i'm sitting at to put music on it. Also flac, although that may not be that big a deal with a portable mp3 player's inherent sound quality issues.
I use Amarok (that's how they prefer to spell it now, they dumped amaroK). Right now I have it set to use the xine engine, even though the Realplayer one is supposedly better, but I can't tell the difference and the realplayer engine can't play flac's. Sometimes I use xmms, which suprisingly has noticably better quality than either of the engines in Amarok.
For portable music I own a Rio mp3 player that was given to me, but a lot of the time I just use CD's too.

Did you try mplayer?
I mean, I even use it on good old windows. This player is just so great.
creative zen neeon, 2GB. still in good shape despite rough handling.
iPod 80GB. I tried others, but the iPod seems to be the sturdiest player I've used.
I use Amarok on Feisty Fawn, foobar2k on Windows and iTunes on my Macbook.
Insignia 4GB. It's nice, but my mac crashes it every once in a while...
...read: Whenever I put it to sleep with the player still connected.
Creative Zen 30GB. It's sort of bulky, but it hasn't crashed my computer, though its locked up twice. It's pretty reliable and plays videos really well, also has good recording quality.
Foobar on Windows, Audacious on Linux. Both work fine for my purposes.
I have no physical mp3 player. Never saw the need.

Never leave your basement, eh?
ipod. i dont like it!
iTunes on this here MacBook.
Don't have the money for an iPod. Otherwise, I'd have one.
I am Steve Jobs' bitch.
creative rio zen jukebox 20gb original (thick) version
if we're talking software, foobar2000 on windows, and a program I wrote myself called FalconPlay on my Atari Falcon.
I use a 512 iPod shuffle, but I am saving up for a Play-Yan micro so I can get a SD card for music and two others for TV/Anime/Movies. Plus, having the mario skin on my Famicom micro will bring things together quite nicely!
For computer, I use winamp. Moved from iTunes after the 7 edition came along. All songs sound scratchy.
I have a 30 GB iPod black, but I really need an 80 gb.

Very funny. When I go out I prefer to be social; wearing earphones screams 'I would rather listen to music than talk to you!' Which is usually true, but I like to look more mature than that.
I used to use an ipod nano...but...it fell overboard when I was boating. So now I'm stuck with a creative player, which is pretty good though.
> wearing earphones screams 'I would rather listen to music than talk to you!'

I don't see what's bad about honesty.
>>165 Honesty would be saying: 'I don't want to talk with you.'
A pair of vibrating speakers attached to your head is worth a thousand words.
Some Samsung 512MB player. I really need something new!!
Portable: 20 GB iPod. It sucks, I hate it, I had to have it replaced 3 times due to faulty batteries. Looking at just digging out my MD player as that worked wonderfully for many years.
PC: WinAmp.
NOBODY uses a Zune? I'm torn betwixt that and a Zen (ipods cost too much), but I only know one person who owns a Zune.
On PC, I use Winamp.
I use winamp to rip, and foobar2000 to transcode and play music files.
iTunes (2.? on my old OS9 mac, 7.? on my crappy WinXP laptop)
Songbird (on my WinXP laptop)
iPod for my physical MP3 player. 30Gig video.
I used to have a 60 gb ipod. but my dad wanted it for himself and he switched it with his 80 gig one. I thought, "this is absolutely weird. who in the right mind would do such a thing?" but alls well that ends well. i use an ipod to listen to music. and my sister uses a zune. looks shiny.
itunes i use for computer and laptop

Can anyone here tell me if the Creative Zen or Zen:M who has had it for a decent period of time (6 - 8 months at least) if there is a faulty headphone jack that you are experiencing? I am going to buy a new mp3 player but I keep hearing about this faulty headphone jack, it seems to be a common problem among high-capacity mp3 players.
I have a 20GB iPod right now and the HDD is dieing. It's been about 2 years since I got it and I'm not in the mood to buy another. I was thinking about getting the Zen:M or iAudio X5 b/c of rockbox and wanting to play FLAC.
Zunes suck, end of discussion.
iriver clix for me~
I really want the gen2 now.
I bought an iPod because I read some seemingly trustworthy review saying its audio quality was really good. A few days later, I found out that I was pretty much duped. Oh well.
I've been meaning to install RockBox on it, since then it'd fit more quality music. <3 aoTuV
Since I'm getting a 4gb memory stick, I will probably use my PSP for music now, but I am getting an iPod as a gift in a few weeks too.
I use a Sansa e280. Pretty solid MP3 player. had it for about 8 months and it hasn't failed me yet. Plus, it has expandable( microSD slot ) memory.
I use iPod Shuffle, and I have an iPod Video but I don't use it as much as the Shuffle. What can I say... I like iPods.
I've had a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB since sometime in 2002 or thereabouts [was still $350 back then D:!]. It was the perfect machine until just about a few months ago when the headphone jack got busted. One of the stereo channels cut out so it was only going through the right speaker.
Instead of bothering to fix it [which was probably possible] I decided to upgrade to a 60GB Zen Vision M, since my 40 GB was running out of space! I think I made a good decision there, because the Zen Vision is fucking awesome. I was a bit wary of videos being hard to see, but the screen is actually really nice. Just don't take the protective plastic off :) mine's still on and I fear the day it gets removed. It just seems kind of delicate compared to my old Nomad. So far it's a really great player though, and the battery life is much improved over the Nomad as well.

XMPlay, fuck yeah
