Does anyone else listen to this band or any IDM in general? I find it to be quite good background music, although it's definantly not the type of music which will hold much popular interest.
Aphex Twin, Au Techre, Boards of Canada... I dunno much about the genre, but it's good shit :)
"Hedphelym" (Ambient Works) and "Beetles" (The Richarddjames Album) are probably his most august pieces in my opinion. That ICCT Hedral isn't so bad either (a bit of a letdown).
I'm not sure what IDM "is", but here are a select few bands similar to those mentioned above (which I also enjoy):
µ-Ziq ("Bluff Limbo")
Venetian Snares
Marumari
Arovane (atleast "Atol Scrap" and "Yeer Disper"; some of the other stuff borders on noise)
Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto ("Insen", "vrioon", Alva Noto solo is very noise)
gas/high skies (em:t0095, which means extreme quality. actually, the whole em:t output, EVER is extreme quality. borders on ambient though.)
Aphex Twin´s Quoth is an awesome song.
What's IDM?
It Doesn't Matter.
>Intelligent Dance Music
lol
film

It's a relative term.
IDM is a crappy name for the genre. What are some other names?
>>11
Braindance...
But yeah, the name is lame. I love the music though.
>>12
Braindance -> brains -> intelligence -> LAME >_<
The genre needs a better name.
Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto = win
I just stick with "electronic music". If it's particularly out-there, "experimental electronic music".
Aphex Twin, µ-Zig, boards of canada, young american primitive, venetian snares, Telepopmusik... I really don't know how to classify electronic music.. (I know about Ishkur's guide but god damn that is too many genres). I mostly listen to Groove Salad on somafm.com and if I like a song write down the name and look for more later. I wish they had a bigger rotation though as hearing the same songs constantly gets a little old. Frankly, I've heard most of my own collection too much as well. =/
Welcome to formatted radio.
Personally, I think Ishkur\'s guide is too complex. I doubt, for instance, that categories of music based on countries, in most cases, are necessary.
enjoying boc as I type
For some reason I can't help but love the fact that they actually named a song after amo bishop roden
I heard it Ishkur's was made as a joke for all the sub sub sub genres of electronic music. It does have some funny stuff, like his reviews of most of the noise genres.
Aphex Twin doesn't really make dolphin music. Some of his ambient stuff (Film :D, I suppose, but he does a lot of glitchy stuff to. Dolphins + Drills...
Been listening to a bit of Venetian Snares lately. It's rather... different, let's say, to other electronic music I've heard. The only thing I can compare it to would be the V/VM "helpaphextwin" rehash of a bunch of Aphex Twin's tracks, except not like it at all.
Imagine, if you will, an "i care because you do"-time Richard D. James and the guys from Autechre in a locked room with all the amphetamines, mushrooms, alcohol and downers they can consume. That'd be a pretty good approximation.
I suppose I still prefer powernoise to this; at least powernoise has (well in general!) a rhythm you can keep up with. Maybe I just need a few more listens.

the only venetian snares album i really liked was rossz csillag alatt született. the rest is too erratic for me.
>>24
I just found out that "winnipeg is a frozen shithole" is one of the more abrasive of his albums. Funnily enough, at this point I'm disappointed -- I was hoping for more of not same but similar.
Unborn babies is the best V.Snares song
These composers dont know what and how to develope an melody so they just put the same random drumpatterns running until your ears start to bleed... Renoise Tracker lol.
and i like it :)
Can't believe no ones mentioned Autechre... rivals Aphex imo.
RUBBER JHONNY!
>>25
winnipeg is a frozen shithole is terrible
rossz csillag is easily his best album, track 3 ["gloomy holiday" except in hungarian, can't be bothered to remember/look up the name] and track five [hajnal] are the best
higgins ultra low something something is also good, but it's pretty mindless
half of snares's music is awesome and the other half is shit
Yay IDM! I love IDM!
My MP3 player is full of this shit and at home I listen to cliqhop idm on soma.fm. Now I'll try to find everything that was new to me here. Thanks!
Squarepusher and Amon Tobin... seriously, oooh and hive. gotta give those a listen if your line Aphex.
Cliqhop! I love somafm, but it annoys the hell out of my coworkers!
Really, the best albums by RDJ would be the Richard D. James Album, drukQs, and Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Why:
Richard D. James Album
drukQSs
SAW85-92.
As far as aphex twin, I've always really enjoyed Flim when I'm stoned
Xtal is his best song. Definitely. No contest.
I just discovered Autechre, and I am kicking myself for not listening to them earlier. Also, I've only listened to one of their songs so far, but I love it. "Second Bad Vilbel" from 1995's "Anvil Vapre".
Somewhat less-known compared to most artists named in this thread, but I've liked Somatic Responses for awhile. They're kind of IDM-ish, sometimes more rhythmic noise. Their tracks are really complex and intricate, sometimes interrupted with slow beautiful moments of piercing chords. I'd especially recommend their double album "Adverts" from 2003.
As for Aphex Twin himself, most of his music tends to bore me. I mentioned Autechre to a friend the other day, and he said, "They're like Aphex Twin but not boring?", and I pretty much had to agree with that. (from what little Autechre I've heard, mind you)
What about Meathole? That was okay, in my opinion. Though not so much as Cavalcade of Glee.
Oh, and Aphex Twin is indeed boring. Like the Radiohead of IDM.
I like IDM a little, but only because it is something that isn't on the beat all the time like most techno.
I like that IDM is a very user=involved genre. Like, if you listen to IDM, there's a pretty good chance that you make music by yourself on your laptop too. watmm, soulseek, all that stuff.
I think some related genres include: Downtempo, trip-hop, chillout, ambient... that's all I could think of right now.
Anyway, I like listening to (that's related to this type of music): Boards of Canada, Bonobo, Nujabes, Explosions in the Sky, Blur, Broken Social Scene, Mum, Air (not the anime), and that's all I could think of right now.
But anyhow, these types bands are somewhat slow compared to Aphex Twin.
I wonder if any of you have heard of Distance/Lackluster? He is one of my favourites.
http://www.lackluster.org/
Many free releases available on netlabels here and there.

Excellent job posting indie rock and post-rock in a thread about IDM, dude.
>>44
¯__¯;; You got me there, but it's /related/ to the genre, at least (IMO).
(キタ━━━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━━━ !!!!!)

I can see something like EitS getting linked to ambient, but Blur? What the fuck does Blur have to do with anything?
I like electronic music. I also make electronic music. Yet I haven't heard a single Autechre song, and only a few Aphex Twin songs. I guess I'm just find them too "mainstream?" But I would probably like Autechre if I heard them, that's the feeling I get.
Oh well, I'm too lazy to pirate them. I'll just keep happily listening to my obscure shit like Shex.
The only Aphex Twin I enjoy is Avril 14, and it sounds a lot different that what they usually play.
one artists i didn't see mentioned is plaid; hit up any of their albums, though 'rest proof clockwork' and 'double figure' is highly recommended.
Avril 14 is an amazing trick.
But that twat from Saturday Night Live sampled it
and now it's lost it's beauty.

If you let an external force ruin an album or a song for you, you are a douchebag.
You're like the people who say they can no longer enjoy Daft Punk because rappers sample it.
I disagree with your douchebag assertion.
A beat, intro or melody swiped from a good song and used by a performer I loathe ruins the experience for me. Actually, any performer.
I don't like listening to John Cougar and hearing Michael Jackson.
...or watching a Twisted Sister video and seeing the same Michael Jackson.
For some reason a bad cover isn't as damaging.
According to you, if Britney Spears'
sang every song by The Beatles,
you would have no problem listening to those songs ever again.
I "sort of" like Aphex Twin. I love a few of his tracks, but I honestly don't like most of it. I've found many more IDM artist that I like because of him though. Also, I think I am the only one who thinks that SAW85-92 is overrated.
IZ-US
(stop making that big bass!)
I just found Drukqs at a thrift store for like $2.50
That was pretty cool. And it's not damaged at all. Plus, I like the CD!
>>56
you're not.
