Which would be better for running a TEXTBOARD forum? Trevorchan has a lot of features, but is kind of buggy.
Just wondering if Kareha is a cut above.
Kareha is efficient unless you got a dqnload of threads, looks nice, is easy to install (No need for a database etcetera), rather secure and mature, and has most features people need. So yes, I'd go with kareha.
Trevorchan is somewhat dangerous to install, the guy doesn't really understand PHP
There's also that PerlHP textboard that uses MySQL...
I use kareha, no problems at all.
Trevorchan is a mess. The new version Kusaba is also a mess but not nearly as bad. There's some silly stuff though - hardcoded HTML inside PHP; PHP generating always identical pages from data each time they're accessed wasting server resources (just use normal HTML for static pages, damnit), etc.
There was FUTS (Fixed Up Trevorchan Script), which was a patchset to repair TrevorChan's security issues. There's also the 7Chan Patches for Kusaba which add a number of features and make many repairs.
I'm working on my own patchset for Kusaba which I call Fuku (Fixed Up Kusaba) and a friend plans to use Fuku as a basis for a security-enhanced version "Fugu."
Kusaba has SQL littered all over it's files, too. And at some points, it looks like critical security bugs were just bareley avoided by chance... I wouldn't trust the thing with anything, and above all, it's fucking slow.
If you're going to try and fix it up, you might as well start over with a clean slate. That would probably be easier.
(Not to say kareha does not have it's share of problems, too... for one, it gets slower the more threads there are. But it still beats kusaba in just about any regard other than "silly 'features' like stickies and a blotter to make this look more like 4chan". Maybe the administration... but not by too much, and nothing that can't be added to kareha in a days time if need be.)
A more philosophical issue with kusaba is this retarded kind of "let's be a lot like 4chan mkay" style of it which activeley encourages making a 'new' board which is just like any other board, with nothing new, and no real difference from all the other boards like it.
Also, seriously: What's with that blotter? What the heck do you need it for? Now the site news is spread out between two places, which makes for kickass confusion.
And stickies? Please, if it's board news or rules, place it somewhere above the post area, in a smallish way so it doesn't take too much page real estate. And it it's an "legendary thread", well, take the bump limit off, and the users will keep it alive if it is really that great, and it'll be pruned when they're tired of it. No moderator-imposed sticky bullshit required.
