Why does IRC seem to corrupt anyone who associates with it? I've seen smart, sane people end up weird and crazy after a month or so. What's up with that?
It kinda has the same effects as 4chan, doesn't it?

Good thinking;
There's something about a shit load of people typing all at once that drives mortal men mad.
What ever happened to 4chan and 7chan? I came back after a week and they're gone o.o
I'm getting an apache error when trying to get onto rapidsearch.yi.org T_T
Well, /b/ is better right now than it's been in ages, thats for sure.

I didn't know this happened, at least so dramatically. I've become more socialized and productive since I kicked the IRC habit, but I was never... that much... Hmm.
What kind of IRC use are we talking here? How many people in the channel, how active, how many hours of use a week? Are we talking actively looking at the channel and typing, or glancing back into the IRC window every few minutes?
Because in IRC, it's perfectly okay to be an asshole all the time, and people begin being so in reality too.
First time I went to IRC, a window opened greeting me and asking me something, some big favor. I typed my reply (neither too slow nor too fast, normal typing) then I sent it. Then I got a window with a scathing message blasting me for being so fucking slow to respond. From the guy asking me a favor! I was very shocked, and so upset that I stopped using IRC for years. With the time I have grown a thicker hide, but I still hate IRC with a passion to this day. I can see how such daily treatment would make anybody insane after a short while. It's a nest of cuckoos, with people having their nerves in the raw.
Any IRC channel inherently turns into a drama-farm and circlejerk because you have the same people all the time idling 24-7 and even if they never talk their status is directly proportional to their time online. They get Op or Voice status and are then part of the channel's 'elite'. New visitors are shunned and berated as not being part of the in-crowd. Circlejerks like this generate competition and irrational hatred, resulting in events like DDoS'ing unfavorable sites and other idiocy. IRC's really one of the worst districts of the net community.
IRC can go fuck itself
too much damn work and elitism
exept with IRL, you actually get a reward (relationships, money ect..)
I have no idea what the hell happened to you, but as far as I am aware, IRC is a chat room. I have used IRC for damn near 10 years and there is nothing horrible about it. I go there, I chat with people, and I move on with my day. It's 4-ch but not as slow.
Maybe it's because I am not going on IRC crawling through the deep dark underlayer for the latest video of 10 year olds dressed up as furries yiffing. Maybe that has something to do with it.

No, I am simply drama-averse. It's a character flaw.
>>16
Drama happens everywhere you go. It's not more common to see it on IRC than it is in real life. It all depends where on where you hang out.
IRC should be anonymous where you get a random number and everyone talks without sharing names. You don't know who owns the channel either. Or atleast there should be an anonymous channel option. IRC in general isn't effective if the room has more than 20 active users. Too much text and it's impossible for everyone to keep up. It just turns into a spamfest. An elite is ALWAYS formed too. No matter what.
Use a proxy and Anonymous as name? ;)

you must live in the most pleasant IRC channel ever, because i've been on IRC for 5 years and everything that goes on in all 4 of my channels is soul destroying
I've been on IRC for like, ten years now. It hasn't made me a worse person. Perhaps a bit better.
But then I tend to keep well away from channels with shithead ops and networks with shithead admins. It's not a power game, and one should never abuse a position of responsibility for their own amusement. "/kick wanker STFU N00B!!!!1" all you want, but then you end up with browntongues and power fanboys.
And yeah, I'm not an american. Perhaps these stupid games are played by yanks. They tend to behave like rabid dogs in other ways too, after all.
>>21
90% of everything is crap. The American internet-using public is no exception, but don't judge the other 10% by that.
Of course, now I am wrong. My IRC channel just exploded in drama, and everybody is cutting their wrists and/or has gone crying to their mothers.
>>23
A-ha!
IRC is only good for stealing animu and mango
>>25
I can see why you'd want to steal mangos. They are so expensive! (But delicious.)
Everyone who use to chat on irc that I know either grew up and stopped or does something more interesting
I love IRC, though I'm not on a billion channels at once like some people. That may be why I'm not going crazy.
used it for a long time. a lot, in the channels surrounding the "emuscene" of the time. 1998-2003 or so. i learned a lot, i spent time with a lot of different people. i do not regret it. it was a good experience.
You don't look for the videos because you're too busy filming them in the first place. You silly 10 year old furrie cross-dressing yiffer.
irc is full of trolls
