"London, England – Similar to the warning given on cigarette packets that are on sale in the UK, alcoholic drinks will now carry the same label, warnings drinkers to consume alcohol in moderation or risk serious health problems."

"They could include slogans such as 'Don't do drunk' and are expected to be introduced in the next year."

I'm all for phasing out alcohol and all, but when will they realise that these methods simply don't work?

This makes me wonder, just how effective are having big, high contrasty government enforce ads saying "YOU'RE KILLING YURSELF"? I don't know a single smoker who does not believe that smoking is good for them. And besides, if you're already drunk as a skunk, some label telling you that drinking is wrong is only going to either piss you off, or piss your pants.

"I'm all for phasing out excess".
Fixed.

"The diet of southern France, Italy and Spain, rich in olive oil and red wine, is known to protect against heart disease and high blood pressure but this is the first time it has been shown to prevent Alzheimer's disease."

That's an impossible thing to do, because there's no way to define 'excess'. Not all people are equally sensitive to the effects of alcohol, so a millage is meaningless. Furthermore, while one person might consider more than one glass to be excessive, another person might not consider it excessive until he starts to walk funny.
Quite simply, as long as alcohol is easily and cheaply available to the general public, there will be many excessive drinkers, no matter how many labels and whatnot you put on it.

The article doesn't really make it clear whether alcohol has anything to do with the medicinal value of the diet.
Regardless, it wouldn't be the first time it has been shown that a drug has medicinal value. You won't find heroin for a few bucks at your local drugstore, though.

Right. So the lawmaker shouldn't try to legislate this.

Excess is waking up with the wrong person in bed.

I'd call that "suprise" not excess.

Excess is when you later find out they're pregnant and you're the father.
