2ch sure is a broad subject to learn about, even though it is just a website on the internet.
Considering that the Japanese users who come to 4-ch have probably all learned about 4-ch from 2ch in the first place, I figured this would be the best place to ask the 2channelers some questions regarding the monstrosity that is 2ch.
First off, I have come across some weird offsprings, and I would like to know how these relate to 2ch:
* http://www.3ch.jp/
* http://www.2ch2.net/
So: What are these site's purposes and how do they historically relate to 2ch?
Anybody else, please feel free to ask any kind of questions regarding 2ch in this thread!
I've noticed several people here adding line-breaks to their posts, does 0ch give an error if a line is too long?
or is it just to make things easier to read?
関連はないよ。4-chが2chの真似をしてるように、3chも2ch2も
2chの真似をしてるだけ。2chと色々あるのは1chとあめぞうだけだよ。

It's Japanese-style.
In Japanese books and online, they add a linebreak at the end of each sentence,
or sometimes even after a comma if the line is very long.
It looks kinda nice... also, there used to be line length restrictions on Shiichan boards,
carried over from the Japanese software.

Not paragraphs, it looked more
like fitting things into a text

Could be a symptom of people using a 2ch browser of sorts.

Does 2ch suffer from a lot of spam? There's obviously going to be a bit, but I've been thinking about how this style of discussion board compares to things like Usenet and mailing lists. email-type systems don't work that well anymore.
There's some spammers on 2ch, like everywhere on the internet. But 2ch also has a pretty tight moderation and reporting system to restrict such things.
If you look at the message boards on 2chan.net, though, you can see how awful things become if there's no real moderation.
let's go to 2ch!

i want to know site which is famous among english users,
like 2ch among japanese.
if you know something, please post! XD
If there'd been stuff like 2ch, who'd have bothered to establish a 2ch-style message system like this one?
I dont think that there exists one big and famous site like 2ch.
There are many popular sites like slashdot but they are far from 2ch.

As >>14 said, there's really no English site that is as popular among so many different people as 2ch. There are some big sites, like http://www.slashdot.org/ and http://www.fark.com/ that are quite well-known and popular, but not as big and varied as 2ch. And in my own opinion, not as interesting. There's also http://www.livejournal.com/ but that's just for people talking to themselves, not to others.
www.metafilter.com is pretty big, but not very good in categorizing posts. It's also not good for a discussion over an extended period of time. You also have to register, which sucks.

>>15 >>16 These two are totally off. Fark, Slashdot and Metafilter all get under 10,000 posts/day, so they don't compare at all.
Here are the biggest English forums on the Web, compared to 2ch:
Forum ....................... Posts per day ... Online ... Forum subject

The first three are game related, so they don't really count. Multipurpose only, please.

It's for comparison only. Slashdot has a limited scope as well.
By the way, the "online" figure is the number of people browsing the board at the moment I accessed it :v

http://forums.somethingawful.com is very large and covers many many topics. In my opinion it is somewhat similar to 2ch because of such a wide range of posters (from many different professions, ages, a few somewhat famous people, etc) and topics.
Some consider it elitist or whatever but I love it very much. Some things can be annoying like catchphrases or simply obnoxious people but it is a very great information resource and place for discussion. Some people might be idiots but you are bound to find very intelligent, rational, and genertally great people as well.
Of course it is a $10 registration fee (one time only) which many people hate but although I registered before the fee was required, I would gladly pay it again. It is a really fun place.
Sometimes the forums are open to be read by everyone without registering so I think it might be nice to check out.
SomethingAwful sucks. Registering sucks. Having to pay for a forum sucks.
But the western internet users just love to feel special about their accounts.

SA solution: Pay money to post, trolls/crappy posters either donate huge amounts of money to register many times or are turned off by the cost. Additionally this pays for the servers!
Problem: People don't like paying money for Internets.
2ch solution: Screw all attempts at stopping trolls and crappy posters; just ignore them.
Problem: This practically invites spammers to your forum.
99.9999% of forums solution: Registration prevents crappy posting lol
Problem: Hahaha. This isn't a solution at all, c.f. most of the top 10 forums I listed!
Both models require huge amounts of volunteer moderation, but on a popular and enjoyable forum it's easy to find good volunteers. Considering that Western forums evolved from old egotistical BBSes, I think SA is the pinnacle of the registration model. But 2ch is a far better solution, I agree. Slashdot solution: introduce layers of moderation to hide trolling and reward good posts.
Problem: introduces bias, encourages groupthink and ego-building.
Recently, when trying to post on 2channel, I come across this error message, what does it mean?:

There's a thread on the Internet Culture board about 2ch:

Does anyone know how 2ch/0ch checks when to close threads even when they haven't reached 1000 yet?
It's based on the filesize of the thread.
512kb, to be exact

Nothing else? Don't old threads with no activity get purged automatically?
Like, an upopular thread on the NEWS4VIP board would probably only stay there for one day maximum.
Well, yeah.
