More like "they wanted to suck up to the west real bad because they felt they'd soon get screwed over like China and India".
A lot of the culture, morals and laws Japan has imported from the west simply stemmed from a feeling of inferiority that cannot be simply reduced to some actual ethical inferiority but a really weird and highly perspective-dependent historical encounter with western Imperialism.

I always thought the whole 'Adam and Eve realized they were naked' thing was stupid as hell. They might as well have eaten the apple and realized their taxes were overdue. Same analogy applies to Japan; just because you learn someone disapproves of something doesn't mean it is actually bad. They never should have changed/added those laws.

Why the obsession with Japanese porn laws? Buy a Hustler, or a German magazine (Europe doesn't seem to have porn laws), and let Japan write her own laws.
