Why? Why shouldn't he go to Japan, the country of his interests? If there's something he should fight with himself, or learn about himself, he can do it there. It probably is the best place for him, or anyone who has a dying passion for another place, to do that. This is the idea behind "pilgrimage" isn't it? It's a quest, and a good one.
