Over 200 Threads in /news/ (7)

I am hereby politely requesting Sling to group some of his news posts together in bigger, more general threads that are somehow topical or otherwise categorized.

Or maybe somebody has a better solution for all of these mini threads popping up. I don't think there's much benefit from them, seeing 50 threads on the frontpage with 1.5 replies in average doesn't really motivate to read them all, either.

Thanks for shitting on my thread.
Next time, please consider providing something useful to a thread that is adressing an issue in a sincere way.

Well whether or not the administration can do something about it, it is kind of an annoying trend, though. People seem to like posting news articles in there but nobody ever wants to discuss them...

If not the administration, then at least us. Can you think of any general kind of categories that would cover a number of news posted lately? We could set up the threads.

Hmmmm. My thing about that is, I think the main "problem" with the News forum isn't that there's a bunch of little threads, but that nobody's replying to them with analysis or discussion. That's what the board is there for, right? It makes sense to have one news story per thread so that people can talk about it in the replies. So would having consolidated threads for topics encourage discussion more, or would it just promote "story-dumping" without any talk?

Anyway, regardless of that, I think general threads for big general stories like "the war in iraq" or, uh...well, that's the only example I can think of right now, would do well on that board...the problem is, most of those little topics are obscure stories that don't really relate to any general theme in particular, so they're hard to categorize.

By the way, what are the news boards like on 2ch? Are there little threads on there too? Or mostly controversial in-the-news topics with real debate and discussion? Or random news items placed with a lot of "i read that too, haha" sort of replies, maybe, because of the high amount of general traffic? I can see a news-themed board having a lot of different dynamics. What works?

Anyway, just random thoughts.

I would rather have less news stories with more discussion and posts in threads than what is currently happening with the board.

It is, in my view, totally acceptable for people to criticise, analyse, link to other related articles.
