What is RIGHT? What is WRONG? (23)

"It’s not just the content of our moral judgments that is often questionable, but the way we arrive at them. We like to think that when we have a conviction, there are good reasons that drove us to adopt it. That is why an older approach to moral psychology, led by Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg, tried to document the lines of reasoning that guided people to moral conclusions. But consider these situations, originally devised by the psychologist Jonathan Haidt:

Julie is traveling in France on summer vacation from college with her brother Mark. One night they decide that it would be interesting and fun if they tried making love. Julie was already taking birth-control pills, but Mark uses a condom, too, just to be safe. They both enjoy the sex but decide not to do it again. They keep the night as a special secret, which makes them feel closer to each other. What do you think about that — was it O.K. for them to make love?"

Taking account the hypothetical scenario from before, what do YOU think? Is it right or wrong? Why do you think it is right or wrong?

Well, they didn't keep that a secret too well if your asking me, an outside observer, about it. Hypothetically, I wouldn't know about it unless I was Mark. Or Julie. In the former case I'm disgusted with myself, and the later I'm intrigued and curious about my female body.

Well, how am I supposed to judge an event of which there should be no evidence?

Given the facts, what does it matter to myself of society as a whole given the circumstances of their act? Incest can certainly lead to the appearance of one-eyed lizard babies with an IQ of 12, but they took precautions against this. Because incest can lead to such problems, it should certainly not be promoted and kept to a minimum. Since they keep it a secret, that's working too.

So, what does it matter?

Is that what I'm supposed to think? I'm not registering to view that article...

Its not really a question of 'it doesn't affect me' or 'it does society no harm'. Is pretty much an ethical question. Yes, incest is wrong. For the most part. But in this case, is a victimless crime! But still, since it's still an act of incest, they shouldn't do it! But why, why should they not do it? We can't just say they cannot, because it doesn't feel right.

Because each step across a line moves the line, and brings us closer to the aforementioned legions of one-eyed lizard babies with IQs of 12.

>>6 This case is clearly an exception, because most people wouldn't do it (because, seriously, gross). Those involved took precautions. They're not promoting the act because they keep it a secret. They're both fine with it, apparently. What does it matter to me or you or anyone else? If they were going around yelling about how great sex with your sister is, I'd be worried, but they're not...

ALSO, this can't be the first time someone has had sex with their sister, so that line was crossed a long time ago... but that's neither here nor there, so whatever.

Check it, in terms of evolution the problem solves itself. If these idiots have kids, they won't be capable of breeding. In fact, they probably won't be capable of standing upright. So what does it matter? If you're so messed up that you want to have sex with your sister, maybe you ought to? In fact, liven it up: don't wear a condom! It will keep your sister out of competition for breeding for at least nine months!

It's still not my problem. Let these jerks have sex with their immediate family.

A better and simpler question would be: If Mark and Julie are the only two people left alive after the rest of humanity is wiped out in a catastrophic event, would it be okay for them to have children?

I like this question, because most people would agree that the rules definitely change in such a situation.

I think it's worth noting that in the situation presented in the OP, the brother and sister take every possible precaution to prevent conception and make sure it is a personal secret. That makes the act of having sex "okay" strictly because of educational purposes, but the act itself doesn't validate or prove any kind of moral or ethical decision.

If anything the hypothetical couple takes steps to prevent conception and treat the act simply as exploratory, suggesting that they believe it to be wrong because of the lack of genetic diversity between them.

SCIENCE!

Why is this in the science section?

And his kids turned out just fine...

This thread is full of bullshit and I bump it to reflect the seriousness of these idiots.

We eat inbred chicken and beef. We inbreed dogs. We inbreed veggies. All to make things better.

I say we take steps to breed the Aryan race, today.

So what happens when you breed a Japanese and a Canadian?

That must never be allowed to happen!

I get this terrifying mental image of a child who can't decide whether to end sentences with "eh?" or "desu~"

I chuckle at the image but my humor soon grows to terror as I realize how truly troubling it would be to the poor child who had to deal with this affliction.
