China to Develop Own DVD Format to Break Foreign Monopoly, Avoid Heavy Licensing Fees

"The official Xinhua News Agency said the new standard will be based on but incompatible with HD DVD"

"The Chinese standard, not expected to reach markets until at least 2008, would provide higher definition, better sound and better anti-piracy measures, Xinhua quoted Lu Da, deputy director of the government-affiliated National Disc Engineering Center"

"Up to 80 percent of DVD players are made in China, but makers have to cough up around 40 percent of the cost of each player to license holders, according to Chinese reports."

Slashdot picked it up.

"If based on, but incompatible means...
That it is HD-DVD but without DRM. I fully support this effort!"

Hehe. "Better anti-piracy measures" means no DRM at all!
I like the idea. Plus, it makes sense. Why would Chinese people want to buy HD-DVDs that they cannot play in their zone? Now, if they had an HD-DVD player that doesn't care for the zone and doesn't require a special TV, and is cheaper than a normal HD-DVD player, it would sell well. No more need for mod chips and solder irons.
