So, What do you do when you've just gone and spent more on your computer than you know you probably should have? Hehehehe...
Just ordered a nice 22" Widescreen NEC Monitor at a pretty good price, a new video card, power supply, ram, a X-Fi gaming sound card, and a pair of $250 headphones...
I feel... dirty.... maybe. Or do I? I think I might be relieved, I've been itching to buy this crap for a while now, so I guess it had to happen sooner or later, but I can't get over how incredibly luxurious and useless the stuff I bought was. I mean, I could have spend that money on college, or rent, or food... Well, I guess that's consumerism for you, it's probably what keeps this glutted country sane and running, or insane and running, not sure which.
250$ headphones?
Are an audiophile?
Just enough to appreciate the difference, they were these:

I'm seriously wondering if the widescreen is worth it, or if I should cancel the order and hold back on going LCD for now. Right now I have just a CRT 17" Dell Trinitron with a 1024x768 85hz native res. It's not great, but it gets the job done. I know if I were ever to get seriously into design or video editing, I'd need the widescreen real-estate though.
Widescreen actually gives you less screen space (at least when counted by number of pixels) compared to a "regular" 4:3 monitor with the same diagonal inch count.
There's other reasons to get one, of course: movies fill the screen better; or, if you can tilt it 90 degrees it might be better for reading, but depending on what you do, 4:3 might be better.
So yeah, cancel that monitor and spare your conscience. Then get one next month instead.
I like widescreen as I can fit an IDE window and a web browser horizontally without having to pay for a screen several inches "bigger".
Of all the things you've ordered, you're probably going to appreciate the new monitor the most.
Yeah, I think you're right, it's great for gaming too. MUCH less panning to get a complete visual of a room.
Widescreen is the future.
On the other hand, I'm thinking of trading in these closed-back headphones for open ones. These headphones have excellent resolution, but they're a little too resonant in the mid-ranges (typical of closed-backs I know). It makes the whole thing sound a lot tinnier than it would otherwise, pity, cause I love these cans' resolution. So I think I'll stick with Sennheiser and buy the HD 555, or maybe HD 596 if I can find a good price.
Not sure if it's a good idea to buy "refurbished" headphones though.
>>8 he means the Sennheiser HD 595
