I am totally new to Linux. I installed xubuntu on an older computer and immediately downloaded the latest flash player from adobe. The quality completely sucks for Youtube videos, very choppy and slow. Is there a reason why this is happening? I used to run Win2k on that computer and it played videos perfectly.

flash player for linux is slow and buggy because linus didn't pay adobe enough.

try using opera for windows under wine and the windows version of flash player, it works much better than the linux flash player for me.

Yes. There is a rather long and technical explanation as for why, if you feel like it, you can read up on that on penguin.swf if you feel like it: http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/2008/05/flash_uses_the_gpu.html

Meanwhile, the new beta version of the flash plugin might be faster for you. You can grab it for trying out here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
