I'm wondering what the best way would be to receive and watch Japanese television - not just the anime and j-dorama, but all of the other stuff too - in my own home in sunny Britain. Ideally a complete package with all the major Japanese television channels (NHK, Nippon, Fuji, etc).

The only ways I've thought of doing it are:

1. Internet streaming stuff - I've only found a couple of channels available streaming over the internet, and a) they seem to only be available at certain times, b) aren't actually live and so play the same clip over and over, and c) they are shitty, shitty channels. Am I missing some awesome place on the intrabutts?
2. Purchasing an extensive satellite TV package - I'm not even sure where to begin with this. Is it expensive? Do they all require huge satellite dishes? Would there even be one with extensive Japanese channels available to me in the UK?

Are there any other obvious ways I'm completely missing? I'm asking here in case someone has gone through something like this, perhaps to receive foreign television from somewhere else. Any help is appreciated!

There's no particularly easy way to pick up all of another country's major TV channels, as far as I'm aware, unless said country is nearby and they have unencrypted satellite transmissions.

I haven't heard anything about Japanese TV being made available via satellite in the UK, either - there's really no call for it, after all. The UK's Japanese immigrant population is very small, so basically it'd just be catering for a few random international students and wapanese.

The only one I've found so far provides just one Japanese channel (among about 400 others).

I'm totally willing to pay for this kind of thing, but oh well.

My Japanese teacher gets Japanese channels, and I live in England. I'm not sure how he gets it though. It could just be the one channel you mentioned, but I'm sure he's talked about multiple channels before.

Why don't you try recording them in Japan, and then watching them when you get back to UK?

To Recieve JSTV you need a satellite dish pointed at Hotbird 13 degrees east, a decoder that can handle CryptoWorks, and a viewing card from JSTV. The station offers a range of mostly NHK programming, including NHK news. There is not much in the way o interesting content though, and the station is often called 'Shiyufu terebi' (housewife TV) amongst the younger London based Japanese community. Because they have no competition, it is also prohibitively expensive, and personally I think it adds little value. You are better off downloading the programs you actualy want to watch from Japanese entertainment bittorrent sites.
