3D: Fad or here to stay? (9)

What do you guys think of the latest attempt at 3D? Is this is the wave of the future or is it an eye-straining disaster?

It seems like the 3D library is exceptionally weak. It's all blue people and carnivorous fish. Then again, the earliest films were mostly guys boxing and trains, so I can give the catalog time to fill out. I'd also like to know why we have to pay a surcharge for this. Does it really cost that much more to produce a 3D film? Did they make people pay a surcharge for sound or color back in the day??

Basically if you want to charge way more for a shitty movie you'll just make it 3D.
Like the latest disney stuff.

Also if your film has no plot you can add 3D in there and no one would notice.

I can't watch 3D movies they really hurt my eyes.
I hope this fad goes away.

I can't believe such an eighties-esque gimmick has become so popular. The worst thing is when the industry retrofits regular films with 3D after effects.
Hatehatehate.

Manufacturers can't think of anything better to do with their engineering talents. What a waste.

Fads never last 50 years. This has come and gone many times over. Gimmicks like this are an act of desperation by the studios. People weren't going to the movies in the 60s because television was ruining them. They responded with Cinerama, 3D, STEREO sound, etc. Now people are just watching streaming video, $0.99 DVD rentals, and Blu Ray at home and the studios are getting desperate again.

What does the theater have to offer anymore, anyway? $10-15 admission fee, sticky floors, a loud 20 minute ad played before all movies, and a $7 soda. Sounds like a swell time, doesn't it? Maybe 3D is just a symptom of a worse problem. It's like they're treating a common cold with chemotherapy. Rather than trying to push 3D with its lucrative surcharge, maybe the studios should look into the core problem. Seriously, the movie theater just sucks anymore. Maybe it's time to radically rethink distribution.

I've seen Sanctum recently and if all 3D movies will be done this way, it should stay. As I've seen couple of other 3D movies and it was painful to watch them and with Sanctum it was pretty fine. And 3D gave extra claustrophobic feeling.

This big 3d push seems to be more oriental than occidental. Sure, there are some big movies advertising 3d, you can't walk into a store without seeing displays for Sony, Samsung, and LG branded TVs that cost upwards of $4,000. HD TVs have been padding the bottom lines of these companies for the last decade, and as the market matures and saturates it becomes substantially less profitable.

It is both a passing fad and a long time trend. It's been around since the 50s and has had its rises and falls in popularity over time. It'll go away sooner or later and then cycle back around in 15-20 years.
