When I saw DensyaOtoko's OP animation, I noticed that it looks like the DAICON4.
Isn't that the one that Okama worked on?
lol okama
lol okama indeed

Episode 1 was so awesome! I got goosebumps of the big KITA!

I haven't watched the show but I watched the OP. Let's juts call it a homage, shall we? It was still very well done anyway.
And holy crap, that song is really addictive. :(
...twiiiiliiiiiight.... I only meant to stay a while....
Just why the fuck are the RAWs so big?
Big compared to anime raws or bigger than needed? They'd be bigger than anime raws for obvious reasons of course...
700mb for 1hour is normal...
oh, one hour
now i understand
> Episode 1 was so awesome! I got goosebumps of the big KITA!
And I got goosebumps the moment Twilight started playing.
Shit. Daicon 4 almost made me scream. It's so fucking amazing for a few people's work. It's better than some modern movies. The POWER of teh animation....

Okay, thanks to !WAHa.06x36, I've been getting a hold of the OPs for DAICON III&IV.
Quote:
"This starts with the IV opening, and the III opening comes afterwards. HOWEVER, the IV opening itself starts with a montage of re-made scenes of the III opening.
The III opening is much lower quality, but would still be impressive if they hadn't gone on and made the IV opening which just blows it away."

wow - i love 80s anime, I got deeply into Anime and Jdrama back in 2000 for a few years. All the ultra-pixel-perfect digital stuff doesnt really grab me. I'm a fan of 80s synth noises, wobbling audio where the video tape stretches and film grain so it just doesnt sit right.
I've been watching Denshya Otoko for a few episodes and it hasnt really grabbed me - the one thing that HAS been bugging me is "where on earth are the anime sequences from?"
I love you!!
Not series. The Daicon III and IV animations were opening movies for the cons of the same name. Furhtermore, they were produced by a small group of amateurs. A group who then went on to found Gainax.
ohoooo! What a cool idea, making a small movie to open a convention... I'm embarased that I thought it was a series now. ;o(
i did some reading (http://www.cjas.org/~leng/daitrivia.htm) and a few other sites too - now I fully understand. Sorry to be such an idiot!
This doesnt quell my hunger for 80s anime tho. I've made a few google searches for lists of THE ones to watch...
I wonder if people here have any ideas?
Well, is there a way to find out which anime were popular back in the good old DAICON days?
Well, you can find out the things being parodied, but that sort of requires that you know them already. Off the top of my head I recall seeing references to the original Gundam, Leiji Matsumoto stuff, the original Macross... A lot of this stuff is still popular, too. And I'm sure MrVacBob can fill us in on the various giant robot shows featured.
Paging Mr VacBob to >>35-
hello.
Hello I haven't downloaded these yet sorry :(

I'll be seeding this torrent for a long time.

Is this relevant

I downloaded the anime OP for Densha Otoko and am torrenting it here http://www.deadfrog.us/index.php?action=view&view=entry&entryid=2525
Also included is the same video, only with a little window in the top left corner, showing the DAICON IV OP, so it's synchronized. Kind of a neat gimmick.
Most of GONZO's key founders were members of Gainax that left after getting fed up with some of Gainax's methodology (or lack thereof) in making anime. One of them was Mahiro Maeda. Maeda had a big role in the production design of Nadia and the angels for Eva in particular, and was one of the main animators on Daicon IV. Since then he's become known as the director of Blue Submarine #6 and Gankutsuou/The Count of Monte Cristo among other works. I'd be willing to bet much of the parts parodied in this homage are parts that Maeda worked on (and perhaps animated for this as well?).
Note on the synchronized videos--the part where the train opens up with the carrot missiles to attack the great cabbage comet empire (besides the obvious Yamato joke) is actually based on animation from the re-animated/edited recap of Daicon III's OP anime that appeared before Daicon IV played. The split-screen view of the missiles launching was unique to the recap version and thus a kind of reference-within-a-reference.
Here are some wallpapers of the Densha Otoko OP:

Still seeding this for MrVacBob
I haven't watched Macross, Gundam, or Yamato/Star Blazers, or much of Matsumoto's stuff, so I missed most of what I just watched.
If you want, I can post every time the Ideon appears (and the Ideon Gauge in the sky)!
Also, I think I saw an Air Force missing-man flight, but maybe that was actually a Macross reference.
Could someone please seed this? I'd be happy to continue seeding for a while if I can just get the other 12% ^^
