When I saw DensyaOtoko's OP animation, I noticed that it looks like the DAICON4.

I downloaded the anime OP for Densha Otoko and am torrenting it here http://www.deadfrog.us/index.php?action=view&view=entry&entryid=2525

Also included is the same video, only with a little window in the top left corner, showing the DAICON IV OP, so it's synchronized. Kind of a neat gimmick.

Most of GONZO's key founders were members of Gainax that left after getting fed up with some of Gainax's methodology (or lack thereof) in making anime. One of them was Mahiro Maeda. Maeda had a big role in the production design of Nadia and the angels for Eva in particular, and was one of the main animators on Daicon IV. Since then he's become known as the director of Blue Submarine #6 and Gankutsuou/The Count of Monte Cristo among other works. I'd be willing to bet much of the parts parodied in this homage are parts that Maeda worked on (and perhaps animated for this as well?).

Note on the synchronized videos--the part where the train opens up with the carrot missiles to attack the great cabbage comet empire (besides the obvious Yamato joke) is actually based on animation from the re-animated/edited recap of Daicon III's OP anime that appeared before Daicon IV played. The split-screen view of the missiles launching was unique to the recap version and thus a kind of reference-within-a-reference.

I haven't watched Macross, Gundam, or Yamato/Star Blazers, or much of Matsumoto's stuff, so I missed most of what I just watched.

If you want, I can post every time the Ideon appears (and the Ideon Gauge in the sky)!

Also, I think I saw an Air Force missing-man flight, but maybe that was actually a Macross reference.

Could someone please seed this? I'd be happy to continue seeding for a while if I can just get the other 12% ^^
