I am like outraged here. I can no longer steal valuable intellectual property as easily as I could before! Now I have to pester my friends looking for "underground" sources rather than public ones! I mean, aren't the rightful owners of these properties obligated to give us a notice and a few weeks to finish stealing their property before they start sending us nasty letters pointing out that we are thieves? I mean, it's not like we're criminals who should be facing lawsuits and stiff fines for theft, right? All we did was steal things and fuck around with them so that people who were never intended to get them in the first place could more easily steal them later. They make us sound like bad people when we're clearly innocent criminals! How very rude. I'm going to retaliate by not buying their products, which I wasn't going to buy in the first place because I'm a dirty thief.

But that fansub group didn't know that the company issuing the C&D owned the rights to some of the stuff it was issued for. (And they're still not sure if they do.)

Funimation recently informed fansub group Shinsen-Subs, "We own or control various exclusive copyrights and trademarks related to the animated motion pictures, including but not limited to, the series known as “Speed Grapher,” “Trinity Blood,” “FullMetal Alchemist,” “Dragon Ball,” “Solty Rei” a.k.a. “Origin,” “Detective Conan” a.k.a. “Case Closed,” and “Tsubasa”." This was after Funimation had contacted the registrar for Shinsen-subs domain name, resulting in the registrar, Joker.com, freezing the domain name. Solty Rei and Tsubasa have not yet been announced for release by Funimation.

For starters, YuYu Hakusho. Eye of Bast??? The items in question are supposed to mirror the Japanese Imperial Regalia, wtf does that have to do with Bast? Let us not forget when they change the sexes of characters in order to obfuscate a homosexual relationship, as they did with Sailor Moon.
I never said that all of the translations are bad. I presented it as an alternate reason for some of the people you seem to be conveniently lumping together.
Also, some of these greedy little freeloaders are actually willing to pay for the bootlegs, provided it's better than the legal copies, so I'm not sure how relevant your focus on cost is.
Insofar as free stuff, if there is an official release that is distributed here, it's easier to just distribute bootleg copies of the official translation, without needing to go through that extra effort of attempting to write a faithful translation.
BTW: do you actually know someone who hasn't broken any laws? Have they never rolled on a stop sign, or driven over the speed limit, both activities which if done haphazardly can endanger others?

actually, we seem to agree on something. i wholeheartedly agree that stuff that gets butchered for a US release should be pirated freely and joyfully. i don't know yuu yuu, though, so i can't say anything about that. it sounds like if the botched name of an item is your MAJOR issue with the localization, that your whole issue with it is kind of really kind of anal, and yes, very convenient.
and sorry, bootlegging the R1 dvd, whose translation you hate, and then watching it, all the while cursing the localization, is pretty hypocritical. at least the guys who download it for free aren't kidding themselves about their reasons.
and you should know, from what your mom and dad told you when you were little about wrongs, that your final statement doesn't justify anything. we've all broken laws and we're not justified. come on now.
