Yaoi fangirls are called 腐女子 (Fujoshi = Rotten Girl) these days.
http://heiseidemocracy.net/2005/05/26/manga-review-genshiken-chapter-38/
http://lilrivkah.livejournal.com/46292.html

The term Fujoshi is a self-mocking word, so you can say like "because I'm fujoshi, after all.", but you shouldn't ask like "Are you fujoshi?", as it sounds mocking others.

Just like male otaku have Akihabara as their sacred land, fujoshi have Ikebukuro Otome Road as their haven.
http://www.gridskipper.com/travel//otome-road-165199.php
One of the hottest spot of Otome Road is Cafe Swallowtail, a "butler cafe" which is the flip-side of the maid cafe. The details are less known since photography is strictly prohibited, but it seems all bloggers who went to there (i.e. the mistresses who went back to their mansion) are really satisfied with the service of waiters...no, butlers.

The suicide rate of Japanese of all ages is more than 2 times higher than Americans, but the rate of American youth (10-24YRS) is higher than that of Japanese youth. I believe the pressure of exam is higher in America than Japan

By comparison the suicide rate of boys is higher than girls in America while that of girls is higher than boys in Japan. It seems American boy's pressure is really high. I'm glad I was born in Japan.

Bahahaha! I don't think so. If true, the reason is not because of exams. There are many, many colleges and universities in America so if you fail to get in one, you can try the other ones or wait a semester and try again. The real reason is probably the breakup of the nuclear family leading to unstable youths.

I was planning a trip to Japan (fly into Kyoto, take the train around the country-side a bit, check out the mountains, end off in Tokyo). Three questions:

  1. My Japanese is pretty rudimentary, but I'm really worried about insulting people because I'm bad at telling the difference between my "boku wa" and "watashi wa" and all that sorta stuff... is it important to know formal Japanese if I'm obviously a foreigner? If so, where can I learn some of the ins and outs?
  2. It's cliche, but... do I or should I learn how to bow? My enter knowledge of bowing currently comes from a few years of Aikido (and you don't "bow" so much as kowtow) and reading "Rising Sun" when I was a kid.

And, last question, nothing to do with travel:
3. Is it still illegal to show the old Imperial Japanese flag (the one with the rays coming off the sun)?

74 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-08 11:25 ID:WzhVxtKr

>>73
I think those kinds of questions aren't something you should ask Japanese.
Anyway...

  1. You don't have to be nervous. You can't insult others so easyly.
But you can annoy others easily if you dress like garbage. Seeing backpacker-style foreigners who wear short pants to show ungry hairly legs is really annoying.
  2. Don't bow unless you can do it naturally. Just nod like you always do (if you want to).
Not bowing isn't rude at all.
  3. How stupid. Aren't you refering to Korea?
Freedom of expression is one of the most emphasized ideology for postwar Japanese.
The Rising Sun flag had never been illegul before, and will never be illegul forever.

It's interesting to hear your views on that. A lot of people wear shorts in foreign countries when it's hot outside, and hairy legs are the norm. Guys usually don't shave their legs...

>> Is it important to know formal Japanese if I'm obviously a foreigner? If so, where can I learn some of the ins and outs?
"Boku" is used only by guys and only with their closen friends/maybe girlfriend. You're better off using "watashi". if you only learn a little Japanese, learn polite form or "desu/masu" form. Plain form is used more regularly, but by using desumasu you won't offend anyone - they'll compliment you on your (however minimal) japanese ability to the point where you want to kill.
>> It's cliche, but... do I or should I learn how to bow? My enter knowledge of bowing currently comes from a few years of Aikido (and you don't "bow" so much as kowtow) and reading "Rising Sun" when I was a kid.
Yeah - you pick it up. Don't stress too much.
>> Are fujoshi really as hated and mocked in Japan as some yaoi fan girls here in the west think they are?
Yep. Otaku and Fujoshi are not appreciated here. They are openly mocked. Seriously. The worst thing you can do is label yourself as an otaku or fujoshi, especially as a foreigner

81 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-07-06 11:44 ID:djg50RaZ

However, a lot of Japanese of 50 years old or less are familiar with the anime and manga from infancy.
I think that the Japanese people are Otaku overall when paraphrasing it compared with
the foreign country. Regardless of the level.
When a middle-aged man is made to talk about Gundam, the appearance that gets excited
is abnormal. It is an interesting point in Japan.

What are your thoughts on the Prime Minister attending Yasukuni Shrine and its impact on relations with Korea, China, and Taiwan? Is the PM making visits as a private citizen, or is he giving preferential treatment to this shrine as a Shinto symbol with great importance to the right wing of the Diet?

83 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-07-08 04:52 ID:Heaven

No it doesn't mean almost anything for Japanese. Stupid Corean and Chinese people read too much into it which bears no immediate relationship to themselves. In fact the shrine suffers from lack of financial resources today. Old people used to contributed money but young people pay no attention to such a patriotic shrine because basically youth hate old-fashoned right wing. Thus visiting of PM is a good free advertisement for the shrine. For the PM, it's also a good advertisement to get votes of old people.

I think that any faith must be individual and free from a state and a society.
I believe the Bible individually and so want evangelization but do not want to let officers persecute others.
Because I am a citizen. I must accept freedom of conscience in the society.
The people in the east Asia including Japan does not seem to concern politico-religious separation.
Someone who want official visit and official insult for Yasukuni both want national evaluatation of a religeon.
Superficially, this oppression by others against others seems to give us some advantage.
But I dont agree it because of civic duty. We can not going to protest under supression, if we do it.

"w" is short for "warota"
"warota" is roughly "I laughed"
