Threads that start with little more than "Discuss" suck. I should know, I was guilty starting one in my days as a neophyte internet user.

Tell me, why is it good? Where is the story and character development? Where is anything of any qualative value in this animation?

Too much shit is animated these days, yes it makes money, but it still blows goats.

>>3 got it. Also, Elfen Lied is a overrated piece of shit that substitutes shock value for any kind of actual insight, and pedo fanservice for any kind of entertainment.

The story is about a diclonius (which is basically a killing machine with powers such as invisible arms (vectors) and looks like a naked female) that escapes from this research facility violently killing most of the staff and guards trying to stop her.

She falls into a river and ends up washed on a beach, 2 cousins on the beach happen to see her and let her stay at their house as she seems vulnerable and unable to speak any japanese. She was shot in the head which probably caused her to have a split personality. They call her nyuu as thats the only word she can say.

The two cousins, who are in love, live with nyuu at the inn trying to start a new life. Not knowing that she is a mutant killing machine that randomly turns evil and the people from the research lab are trying to find her to kill her.

The characters are well developed and flashbacks to memories of previous events gradually gives you more important information about the characters. There are quite a few twists in the story, and is unpredictable.

There are lots of metaphors relating to serious real life issues, such as child abuse and psychological trauma
For a serious psychological 'horror' anime there is quite a bit of humour and some romantic drama interludes too.
yea its only 13 eps, but i don't like long series myself.
Can anyone suggest any anime series similar to this that is better?

Elfen Lied is basically Kanon with an evil bent, really.

It's worth watching, but not if you paid money for it.

The best thing about the anime, is it is the only program that works with Genesis "Invisible Touch". :P

I think there are parts of Elfin Lied that are well-done. For example, everyone at the institute keeps talking about how dicloniuses (sp?) instinctively want to kill humans, but you keep seeing exceptions like young Lucy with her friends and Nana with everyone. I could go on about how Lucy and Nana acted differently not because they trusted humans any more than the other dicloniuses, but because there were humans that trusted them, but simply that the series set up that cognitive dissonance is respectable.

Bandou is an irredeemable bad guy, jobber, and stereotype, but he's capable of things like empathy and gratitude. Kurama tries hard to do the right thing when he has the chance, and despite being a villain, he's one of the most sympathetic to the horned girls. They're fairly realistic for Japanese cartoon antagonists.

And Lucy's life smacks of Greek tragedy.

It's not really a great story, and Rin Okamoto seems like kind of a one-trick pony when it comes to storytelling (if you've read the one-shot MOL whatever it's called). But yeah, I like it.
