I am very late in on this topic, but yes, a lot of what has been said by the intelligent people in this topic is true.

HERE IS THE REALITY:
If you are totally obsessed with anime, etc, it is better to stay in america. You will not be accepted in Japanese society. Otakus are considered even bigger fags in Japan by the general public than they are in america. It is no wonder why most otaku in japan can't get women and are social outcasts.

If you do go to Japan and think "well I don't care if the general population accepts me, I just want the otakus, maids, etc to accept me". Well, that won't happen. Fact of the matter is, the anime otaku in japan hate gaijin even more than the general population does. They don't want you coming into their zone, their world, and fagging it all up. Most foreigners act as assholes in Japan, and as such, all of us foreigners are stereotyped as such, regardless if you are being nice or not.

The only group that will really accept you are the japanese that are obsessed with american things such as elvis, american music, american lifestyle, american cars, etc, etc. Basically the exact opposite of what you are.
